First off thanks to Jayrob for the excellent kit. The parts were machined very nicely, and also packaged very neatly. Much thanks to Daguin for the 445 diode which was shipped very fast and packaged securely. Overall I am very happy with the kit, and it was simple to put together for a laser nub like me. :yh: All I did was sand and polish the copper pieces, and then applied a thin spray-on coat of clear paint to prevent tarnishing of the copper. Soldered the 2 wires and there you go..Thanks again to jayrob and daguin. :beer:

i like how u have the alien in almost ever pic, also nice build and using a clear coat of paint to prevent tarnishing is a great idea ima have to try that myself :D

Nice work. I like how you got the copper to be shiny and reflective. That is the only thing I have not liked about using copper.:beer:

Polishing is pretty simple to do, but it's fairly time consuming. Simply go to an auto paint supply shop and pick up several fine grained sand paper. Migrate up the grades of sandpaper until you get the desired shine, you can literally give copper a mirror finish just takes a bit of patients and elbow grease.

Well the idea came from the internet, I just looked it up, and saw other people doing it with copper wind vanes. :shhh:

It can be a bit tricky spraying something so small, I actually messed up the focus ring, wiped it off, and did it over, because I got some bubbles in it. I then sprayed a thick layer instead of thin light ones, and it seemed to smooth out nicely. That alien is gitd too, mighty bright with the 445.

Thanks. Yea, it takes a bit of sanding, but it's a relatively small heatsink, so it wasn't bad. I went up to 2500 grit and used a 3 part polish and it shined up nice. I actually used a polish made for acrylic plastic, but it worked fine.

I tried on this one to get as close as I could. The clear coat takes a bit away from the shine, and also the flatness isn't as good, but I guess it's a sacrifice for protection of the surface.

That's a pretty good reflection, I got into polishing copper when I was overclocking my PC, most of the high end Heatsinks use copper cores, I think I've still got some 4,000 grit sand paper here somewhere.

If Jay really wanted to have some fun he could polish the sides while it's still on the lathe, makes so much easier to polish on the lathe, takes just a few seconds to do and should give it slightly better thermal conductivity (assuming the dimensions are still within spec).

After seeing your polish job I was thinking about polishing my EZ focus adapater. You can't see my copper but that adapter is pretty dull looking and could certainly be polished up.

Yea, that EZ focus adapter would look nice polished up. I too love computers and heatsinks. I'm using an old zalman 9700 right now which is all copper. This heatsink here is my favorite. -
