Physics of the Impossible with Dr. Michio Kaku.
In this episode he discusses building a death star to destory planets using lasers, awwwsomeee:

Part 1:

Part 2:

There's another episode where he shows how to build a light saber, let me know if you guys are interested, I will post it too :)

The bottom, he "finishes" his theory on the planet-busting laser spaceship! It's a pretty cool concept, and very realistic/possible!

I don't think a lot of his stuff is realistic, i have watched his documentaries and although they are fun to watch and interesting i don't think they're really the "future". Even if the principles behind his ideas were to be applied the inventions would probably be very different than his. His book was interesting though, and in the book he admits that some things are going to more than likely remain impossible, i think the above should be one ;)

That's why he is called a "theoretical" physicist... Of course it is NOT realistic, but it "could be" ?
He explores the what ifs or possibilities. He gets people to think.

The he gets far to much credit because he is just using his imagination :L sometimes i think Stephen Hawking's theories are as crazy.

I don't think he gets too much credit at all, but rather he gets too little :p

When I was in High School, I was dissecting frogs in science class, while in High School, Michio Kaku built a 2.3 million volt atom smasher in his garage....

I wouldn't say that visionaries get "too much" credit. The atomic bomb along with craft that ply through outer space and the ocean's depths are all things that were envisioned with startling accuracy many, many years before they became possible. In a way these first published references were the initial birth of the ideas behind what ultimately became real. The people who first predicted these things could have even filed for patents had they had some theory about how to accomplish their fantastic (at the time) ideas, as all that is required for a patent is an idea, not a functional prototype.

Dr. Michio Kaku pisses me off sometimes, but only because he has to waste his time with these stupid shows. He is too overqualified to be a tv host. I could do what he does for these shows for a fraction of the cost. We all could.

Then I remember that he has been through years of hard work and education and decide that he deserves a nice, relaxing, "what-if" job.

So does he "have" to "waste his time" doing these shows? Is someone holding a gun to his head?

It seems a bit odd to get "pissed off" at someone who has taken the time to use his expertise to share his thoughts with people in an effort to expand their horizons in some way..

I, too, hate it when people do nice things to help educate people and encourage open thought.. it just pisses me off.. ESPECIALLY when people with a good deal of qualifications do it. MAN that makes me mad.. [/sarcasm]

but I do agree with your second statement. Chances are the guy has earned the right to make informative and interesting videos to his hearts content. As for me, I'm thankful to any educated, overqualified individual who shares their knowledge and ideas with the world at large.. it's just a nice way to be IMO.

And don't forget: he's more famous and making waaaaaay more money as a TV host than he would have been just crunching numbers as a theoretical physicist. That's why he does it. ;)

Good point

If someone offered you a tv show host job about a subject you are a master at, with a huge salary wouldn't you take it too. Who wouldnt? I think it's strange when I hear people accusing others of 'selling out' when they are doing what they love AND making a super comfortable living.

Look at star trek for example. The communicator - Spock and James T Kirk would flip them open and chat between themselves or from a planets surface to the ship.

Now we have mobile phones - many of which flip open just like the communicator.

Look at the star trek phaser - destructive gadget they use to kill aliens and blow stuff up. Sure we cant kill things or blow up rocks with our lasers, but we can set things on fire and burn holes in stuff with them.

Two concepts that became reality, and these were based on science fiction.

That red laser pointer he had which he popped some ballons had some balls to it - wonder how many mw it was?
