So I, like all of you, also enjoy playing with beams from time to time.

Dr. Sam had me take a shot of the order on my wall for him, nice and crisp like.

I then remembered back when I tried taking beamshots for you guys, and how pathetic they were. Well, tonight is the redux.

Not only have I gotten you your beamshots. I've also got some other good and fun orange pics. I also took a little video of me misaligning an external HR creating 4 orange beams in the cavity. This was very fun to blow smoke in, and the effect reminded me of Saturn's rings.

I'll need to make a one of those little mirror spinning doodads with this. The name slips my memory.

Anyway! Enjoy the pics and video!

Curious question. Could I create an external cavity on one of my HeNe tubes with the standard mirrors still attached? I know the output end passes a small portion of what is gained up in the cavity but I'm unsure if reflecting this back through does anything.

They're a blast, they really are.

It's like having a whole laser palate that you can tweak and do what you want with. Diodes are definite. Usually one wavelenth. Same with dpss, usually. Gas is like a totally different world. I love tinkering for days on a concept to have it come to fruition :)

Instead of "class 3B laser" it used to say "Gas Fanatic". I need to ask Ave what's up with that.

yea i just realized that you are no longer labeled "Gas Fanatic". i totally get what you are saying about gas lasers being more of a 'palate', which is what i find so stinkin' cool about them! this may not be the appropriate place to ask this, but how much could i expect to pay for a decent HeNe? preferably with a wavelength < 630nm.

what happens if you replace the the imperfect reflector with a high reflector so you dont get any useful loss? this probably sounds like a noob question but i am really wondering.

I take it you're referring to 544.3, 594.1, 604.6, and 611.8? Well. All depends really. If you're buying from someone on ebay who knows its worth, or someone who knows it's a laser from their googling. Anywhere from $75-$1000. I'll see if I can hook you up. PM me with more of what you're looking for, and I can help you out :)

There is nothing "imperfect" about the mirror in the realm of specs. It is doing its job of HR@99.9%+ in the red spectrum (intended for 646nm, and 676.6nm). However, I simply misaligned it on the x-axis, allowing it to bounce between the mirrors. Had I not done this, and allowed perfect alignment between x and y, a different outcome could be achieved. In this case, the output from the opposite end would instead funnel to one output end, nearly doubling out. I don't have exact numbers, but theoretically it should be near double.

Another neat side note. Since this tube passes red, and reflects orange, I can get this tube doing 6 lines using two red mirrors. With a red HR on each end, I still get the original 4 line, but I also get 629 and 632.8nm to resonate.

Super neat!

Let me know if I need to make a video demonstrating anything above. I've always got time to kill after work :)

Great Pics and Vid Bloom! That's a bad@$$ set up there

I agree, the 4 lines with smoke do remind me of Saturn's Rings. Gorgeous color!
