Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

haha now THATS new... the 532 is the one that's washed out. Was gonna take a similar pic today. Might want the 445 to hit a beam stop of sorts, unless im looking at it wrong, and you house is painted blue :D

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Well, the 532 is for my daughter's bday. I tuned it down GREATLY. The 100mW is still homeless ATM, and gonna stay that way until my MS-SSW and Krytons arrive.

The 445 is tuned to 1.9A and seems pretty efficient. The 405 is @ 495mA, and the 650 is @ 500mA.

It's very difficult with the 445's focus knob to get shots that aren't completely washed out. I believe it's lip is catching enough of the light to bounce it around.

The cats are sleeping and so is the SO. So, I think I'll set up for another shot. Thanks!

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Looks VERY nice scum! I hope to one day have a few like yourself. Actually, today my package from Survival will be here

That blue must be a beast! I got a 1.25A driver to power my M140.. I think it will be plenty haha. I'll also get to try out my new Eagle Pair glasses.. very exciting.

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Awesome, kitten! You should have alot of fun with that M-140 @ ~1.25A. The one in the pic is being driven @ 1.9. It burns through 3mm of ABS plastic in 7 seconds flat! I am not fond of this focus knob on multimode diodes. It catches and disperses too much light. I am going to try it again on my 405nm. If I still don't like it, maybe I'll put it up for sale.

Oh...and my 9mm diode is arriving today..and my 3.1A driver if I'm lucky! At least I have my PSU. :eg:

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Which focus knob are you using? The extended SL one?

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

It's a custom focus knob made by a member. I don't want to mention his name here as the comment wasn't positive in nature.

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Understood. I'm sure its nice anyhow. I'll let you know if the SL one has the same issue; its blue like the beaml so I'm not sure how it will be :san:

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

I like the SL extended focus knob...just not at that price! I know I've seen that piece of aluminum stock that they're using somewhere before, it it's escaping me. I'd love to make some to undercut them! Sorry Greg! lol

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

LOL! I have to agree.. $18 for roughly a dollar's worth of aluminum is pretty nuts but I liked the black one on my LPC so much I had to bite the bullet. I should make some Ti ones :)

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Those are some sweet beam shots. :D

I still trying to set mine up were I can get a pic like that. A better camera wouldn't hurt either..
Of course, it might help if i could stop building them..

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Thanks, Chaos! I shot this with just my iPhone 4. I smoke, so the air wasn't completely clean. My only advantage is years as a professional photographer, helping me compose the shots. It's still hard though, in this small apartment and having to lock the cats away for shots like this.

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Heh, i use my galaxy tablet. I have make good particle/optical trapping vids with it, but the pictures are tough to get good. I never was much of a picture taker, just one more thing I'm learning. I also have the same problem of getting a time and place to set up for some pics.

That, along with waiting for my LPM (hoping to get it tomorrow), is why I've delayed reviewing my recent builds.

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

Hey, as long as we're jacking my own thread, you must tell me more about this particle trapping! I saw one of your vids. Can you explain to me what's actually happening, and how it takes place? I think I get what's going on, but not how...

Re: It Was a Good Day in Laser Land...

I first saw it mentioned in a thread around here and searched all i could. IIRC, it is supposed to demonstrate how the unique properties of lasers allow lights ability to exert pressure to trap, or even move particles. I've trapped one, and moved the laser and it would move with the beam. I've also seen vids were turning the focus moved the particle up or down the beam.

I've seen theories on here that it's small carbon particles getting trapped, being able to take the heat.
They only get trapped in the focal point. One analogy that I saw that made sence was comparing it to gravitational lagrange points. Except with a laser, it's optical pressure "pushing" anything after the point and "pulling" anything behind it. If the particle is in just the right spot, it is balanced by the the push from a narrowing beam and the pull of the widening beam.

I've seen different methods of using lasers as tractor beams. The problem is thier limited to very small particles, and of course damage the goods. A few threads on here that i dug out is were i found out how to do it with 200 - 400mW laser, uaually red or 405. I used both of my 650nm ~300mW builds and a sharpie. You want to focus it so the focal point is as close to the laser as possible, about 2-3in is best, but i've done it with the focal point out to ~5in. Then insert sharpie, move back and forth a little to find the sweet spot.

I could be off, but thats the jist as i understand it. Sorry i rambled. :tinfoil:
