This was a bit of a pain to actually finish. I killed my first PHR before it could even work. But I did manage to get a sled, harvest the diode in it and mount it in the axiz correctly. The host is not what I originally planed either. It's a small 3x2x1in project box, the internals are a mess and it runs off 2 AAA batteries (also a mess using tape so it's small enough of a "pack" to fit.)

It's set at 100ma, I can't measure the mw either unless one of my professors can help me. It cant light a match (even with sharpie) but it did make it smoke a little bit. It's easy to smoke black plastic too with a very thin line and I have managed to burn a small spot on pine.

 Congratulations on your first build!
I think everybody's first build is "a mess" We are more worried about getting it working, then aesthetics.
Be glad you only killed 1 PHR, I have read on here about people killing 5 or 6 before getting a working one.
When you get some time, go back and clean up the "mess" inside.(Radioshack sells small AAA holders that only take up about 3-5mm extra then the batteries do) Tidy up a a little bit at a time, and next thing you know, it will be pristine.
BTW: If you have it heatsinked well, you can turn it up to 125mA with only a little less diode life. It should light unsharpied matches then.(if your LD is up to specs.)
Good job!

Thanks guys.

I probably will try and clean it up later on. The batteries are already tight on space and my radio-shack didn't have small AAA holders, but they do have N holders and those are pretty small I might try those. There's no heat sink other then the axiz but the whole axiz is in there.

As for cost it was more then it probably should have been because of having to buy a sled for another diode and I bought parts i never used in the end. Probably around $52 for absolutely everything.

Since I have the sled though I'm gonna use the red diode in it for an unfocused marble holder which will be safe to bring to my friends or give as a gift. I'll get started on that soon, gonna make it a total DIY so I'll be making the driver for that, no need to wait for shipping. As for the optics in the sled I'll save them, not sure if I'll ever use them though.

My 100 mW PHR can instantly light a match unsharpied. Are you sure you have the focal point right? Also when focused tight my PHR stings my bare skin.:yh:

I'm pretty sure my laser is under 100mw, it's set at 100ma but that probably is giving me anywhere from 50-75mw even though it looks bright. If it was focused perfectly it could probably do it but so far I haven't managed that.

Yeah sorry I meant 100 mA. I do not have a meter so I don't know the output. Would be nice to know though.
