So my brother got some dry ice for a school science project, so I decided to take a few quick pictures of my little 5 mW pens shining through it.

Not much since I had about 2 minutes to set up and take them :p Once I get my 1 Watt 445 I think I'll order more dry ice and get creative!

EDIT:
In case you want to see higher quality versions:

That's really cool man. Just a suggestion, (if you want) pure glycerin also works well to create fog. It's cheaper and easier to come by than dry ice. Just not necessarily as thick as I'd like it to be.

Interesting story since you mention price:

So we actually ordered 2 lbs of dry ice a few days ago (they have to have it shipped in) so 10$ for 2 lbs which isn't to bad. We went there to get it and the guy hands us this massive box with 15 lbs of dry ice in it and says "for free, merry christmas". 15 lbs of dry ice for free. :D I don't expect that to be the norm, but it makes for an excellent first impression.

Nicest salesperson ever.

According to TheJoker it should be on its way today, and I'll get a tracking number some time late tonight. :D

Hopefully my batteries don't take too long to arrive.

Had a fantastic idea to get newbies to understand the importance of laser safety glasses.

I'll go to the local butcher shop, see if I can get some pig eyes, then fire the 1 Watt 445 into them until they pop.

Or is that to graphic?

EDIT:

Yes, slightly off topic...

Nice shots. If you're looking for free dry ice, try ice cream shops. Their shipments come packaged in it and they often have extras. Any extra can be used for dry-ice bombs too:D

Yes as Tmack said, it will smell pretty bad but hey, if it changes at least 1 persons mind about laser safety you have accomplished your goal!

Back on subject, had a tiny bit left over after my brother's science project, so I created a thin mist in the sink. I think the thinner mist rendered the beam better.

Only got the 650, the 405 looked very lame in the thinner mist.

Very nice Blarg! I really love how you manged to make a nice beam come out and how the color slowly fades as you move away from the "dot".

Interesting idea on the sheep/pig eye experiment. Would be good extra credit for biology or similar class too, as long as you methodically dissect and label the eye afterwards.

I dunno what's more dangerous; risking burning glycerin, or freezing one's fingertips off

Dry ice is fun. Instantly turn flat floor into a giant air hockey table!

Where does burning glycerin come into this?

And you can touch dry ice for a few seconds without it doing any damage. :p

NO, dry ice is -109F. If you do touch it with bare skin the skin will freeze, but the sensation feels like a burn. My friend worked as a carpenter at the science station in Antarctica. On his first day he took off a glove and reached into a box of bolts....BIG MISTAKE ! and that was only - 70F.
