beasty laser diodes

I purchased a few laser diodes for a customer and here's what I got.

Some of you may recognize the first 2 pictures as ones that we tried to do a group buy on. At the recommended current this baby i'm sure is capable of 500mw. I did not take it all the way to 650ma though. Only 450ma and at that current I got 450mw of 837nm lasery goodness.

neat how it has a little spool of fiber inside - is there anything else other than fiber and that little spool in the big chamber?

Ive stripped approx 20 of those units from sunking, the fiber is quite interesting.. Im guessing here, but they seem to be glass encased in steel or a metal, all wrapped up in something the size of a hair.

You can get the c-mounts in those up to 1watt, but they wont last long at that output.

Great for parts too, the tec inside is 3v and approx 1in. square. Not the sealed type either, the tec has exposed sides, and one member had mentioned in the past, that they can be cut down in size to make multiple, smaller tec's

Also, be very gentle with the fiber, while they seem durable, they snap quite easily :-/

ok so how do you get to the c-mount? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that since this is just a typical c-mount that all that heatsink really isn't necessary for heat dissapation. Also would be really easy to replace the diode and have a much higher fiber coupled laser diode.

Pictures of the insides of the laser diode and TEC would be majorly appreciated.

Id have to dig for pics, or if I have one open I can take some new..

The inside consists of a brass platform that the LD and other end of the fiber are mounted. The brass platform is isolated from the big aluminum heatsink and sits on top of the TEC. Removing the LD from the brass mount is easy, but a steady hand is needed as the end of the fiber is fractions of a MM away from the die.

There was another member who wanted put an 808nm in place of the stock LD, and I sent a 3watt cmount and same fiber unit to rog8811. Im not sure if he did anything with his, but I havent tried swapping them out myself to replace with a higher power LD.

I will see what pics I have and post here. I know ive got a few of those modules cracked open somewhere...

Now that doesn't look like brass to me. It looks gold plated. Very nice setup.

I can understand why rog wanted to throw a 808 in there. I wanna do the same thing.

thanks mario. I tried very hard to see clear enough if the fiber goes right to the diode or is actually part of the diode and just couldn't see.

yeah I know but what I was trying to see is if there was a gap or if it was literally butted up against the die.

There's often a micro lens between the die and fiber as well. So you would need to watch for that as you need VERY precise tools to place a new one ( I'm talking 0.00001mm accuracy ::) )

Anyway, nice diodes you got there ;)
