I'm still trying to figure out the best way to take beamshots so these aren't the best.

Sometimes it is nice to get something in the background with the beams. Check out the beam shots Biord (Three Misty Beams in Multimedia) posted with his garden as a background (great pics) and also I am not sure of the person who posted them, but some beautiful shots on the forum of the Rocky Mountains that combined beam shots that are awesome. Just a thought.....

Like old tires and a rusty swing set? ;)

Seriously, though. Great beam shots.
Well I got trees haha but I got rid of my swing set several years ago. I'll try again on a later date when I get a new laser. Anyway, thx for the comment. :)

The beam shots look great! :)What type of camera are you using and can you take bulb shots ie leave the shutter open for as long as you want?

You can use a cloudy, or dark sky with stars, as a back drop, even the lawn or some rocks. Just look around for something that will contrast well with and help accentuate the intensity and colour of the beam.

Here are some shots I took recently, I included the camera settings, which might help as a guide. It takes a lot of playing around, testing and shots to get it just the way you want!;)

I use a Canon Rebel EOS (the 8 year old version) so I can leave the shutter open as long as I want. For these pics I used a 5 second shutter I think.

P.s. - your back yard is ridiculous... I love it.

I didn't know my nick was changed.

You used a tripod. That is a good thing. The advantage of a tripod is that you can use any shutter time without blurring the picture. I would suggest smaller aperture for more depth in view. If it needs a longer shutter time so what, you are using a tripod anyway.
And try different focus points, close to the laser and the other at distance.
Find out which picture will please you the most.
Hee it is digital so take extra pictures won't cost you more.
We are not using negatives anymore :)

Thx for the advice :) I think I took like 30 or so pics and these were the best out of them.

With a Rebel you should be able to do anything you like, just dont push the iso! ;)

As Blord mentioned try playing with the depth of field and if you have both the camera and the laser on tripods, or at least fixed, you can vary the exposure of both ie switch the laser on for 5 secs and leave the shutter open for a couple of mins (check your exposure first though!) I normally take a few test shots and then introduce the laser. Dont forget you could also have some fun during your long exposure moving the laser around or simply switching it, or other lasers, on and off in different positions! ;)
