My red spirograph diode died the other day for some reason, it was at 250mA, but it was working fine for 3-4 hours. I think that the driver overheated because it was so hot that I couldn't touch it, even though I used a heatsink for it. I tried to replace the lm317, but still dim.

But that's okey, because now I can use the large LD-heatsink to experiment with my ps3 blu-rays. Here's some beam pics of a cheap red combined with blu (I had to try this :D), some homemade diffraction gratings from the ps3 sleads, and a little fluorescence.
In some of the shots is the blu running at 80mA, this diode is kinda crappy so I don't really care about it's health.

Sorry about the quality.

Too many pics...

I've done some more experiments with the ps3 diode. I'm running both the blu and the red LD at the same time (in the same can) and it works good. Except that I can't focus them both at the same time of course. I'll try to get some pics of that later.

Nice, how did you combine the red and blu beams in the first pics? Using a beamsplitter?
Since you are swedish as well,I will also say "Riktigt häftiga bilder!"
This means "really cool pictures!"

Right on!
I use a dichro-ish turning mirror from a dvd sled that reflects red light, but passes the blu in order to combine the two.

I have some pics of the Red/Blu ps3-diode now, should I post it here or in the Experiments & Modification forum?

This is my favourite btw:

Sweet. Good quality pics. I need to get some diffraction gratings and stuff as well.

Your diffraction gratings have a lot more dots than mine do - cool pics BTW. I can't wait to get my own blu-ray one of these days!

this seems like one of those really horrible ideas. lets point a laser into a glass thing and see where the beams go  lol. im sure you knew what you were doing.

I assume that he uses safety glasses when he is pointing a laser into a glass thing. ;) At least I would have done that since it would be difficult to estimate where the beam goes. ALWAYS use glasses when you are working with optics and lasers, if you are not sure where the beam will go. I forgot doing that when I was experimenting with a prism once, and I got my X-85 into my right eye. :-[ Damn, my vision there has not recovered, and I have trouble reading with my right eye now. :( But I at least learned my lesson.

Eh, am I going to get grounded now? Cuz I didn't use goggles.

The lasers are low power (sort of (except from the x-125) and what's the point with the whole experiment if I can't enjoy watching the beams?

I only use my goggles for burning stuff, otherwise I try to think about what I'm doing. So far so good.

Sorry about the eye LG.

Here's another beam-shot, what a mess!

See something wrong? Look carefully and you might see what's going on lol.
