I got my new 100mm macro f/2.8 IS L lens and wanted to try it out on something, so I started with RHD's ~200mW single mode 450nm build. Just something to try out the new lens with... these were all taken handheld - some with manual focus and some with autofocus.

Wasn't paying close attention and burned my hand at one point. Those buggers can burn!

No, all I did - besides try to fry the thing by putting the batteries in backwards if you recall :D (and scratch the heat sink apparently, looking at the macro shots above!) - was get a G-1 from Jayrob and swap out the lens.

The acrylic did have a slightly better dot, the G-1 shows an artifact that the acrylic did not, but you can always switch out based on whether you want a prettier dot or a brighter beam.

At night, with the G-1 it is actually pretty impressive.

You aren't thinking of the 405nm of yours that I DID fry by putting in a battery backwards (my personal specialty) are you? It is still dead, although with your recent post about laser laws in Canada and how they are affecting you, I'm just going to take that one apart and see if I toasted the driver or the diode. I'm hoping driver, because that was a very efficient diode. I was getting 660mW with a G-1 on it! If it is the driver, I need to find out what you were driving it at to get that kind of power.

I think that I am only getting ~550 out of my own 405 build right now, that one is at 478mA I think... Gotta go look.

Nice pictures. You should lower the ambient light to make the beam stronger. :gj:

So, I used copper eh?

That must have been one of the two initial 3.8mm test modules that Pontiac made. I think the brother is... perhaps in my 510nm? Interesting - I totally lost track of the fact that I had used those two copper modules.

Yeah, you probably were ok with it since you had the large focus ring on it and it covered the copper module. I'm glad you did though, I like copper! :)

Yep - that makes sense now.

I can't imagine that I would have every built something where the color clash was visible / not hidden. That would have driven me nuts.

Very nice camera/laser Tom. I'm going to have to get a single mode now :) Can you post some shots of the beam from a users POV? I'd like to see the beam and also a clear picture of the dot. Especially with that camera! good post

Nice unit.

I have quite a few of these diodes in stock but I have still have not gotten to play with one yet as I am still waiting on 3.8mm modules.:yabbmad:

Dude I really want one of these for an actual pointer. What's the price?
