I've always wondered how they made these, the other day I thought it would have something to do with lasers, I just found this video http://www.livevideo.com/video/7AC708782C5949008A44264D5FE5E3E1/3d-laser-engraving.aspx
Wonder how strong the green is to do that :D

They actually use DPSS 532nm for that? I would have thought it was IR or UV.

LoL, I have one of those with my face engraved in it ;D The green must get absorbed pretty well, but not well enough to be stopped by the surface :-/
And they're not really crystals, just glass or plastic. :p

"crystal" sells better than "block of plastic"
I figured that much ;D It's not like the public will know the difference anyway. But at least we could use correct terms on a science forum. :-/

So it is basically a pulsed high-powered laser with a relatively thick beam passing trough a lens with relatively short FL and then directed into the "crystal" with a galvo mounted on the Z-axis of a 3-axis CNC-controlled portal?

Anyone have any idea about how many watts?
