I finally got around to editing the video of my YAG laser. Unfortunately, it's putting out only 8 watts at the moment. It needs some electrical work, some cleaning and a good mirror alignment and it should be pumping out 35 watts. This is just the initial test of the system. I have purchased a new q-switch for it so I can punch holes in metal. That will be another video but here is the initial test:

This is so cool!!!

I ahve a YAG laser too; bought from ebay from heurosciences but till date, I can't figure out how to power or use the YAG laser.

I've got PFN and trigger coil from another guy but just couldn't find a power supply for the PFN at 600-900 VDC!!

Check out this video of my SSY laser head and see how easy it is to fire. You can find power supplies in that voltage range and you can find capacitor charger boards to charge them also. I used a 500V adjustable DC power supply to charge my PFN.

The system consists of two capacitors, two reverse protection diodes, a pulse shaping coil, and the power supply. I triggered it with a BBQ ignitor.

Fantastic!

That power meter looks strangely familiar... ;)

You've forgotten to focus it!

Yeah I'm sure the meter is familiar, lol. I haven't forgotten to focus it. I'm saving that for all 35 watts with the q-switch operating against a piece of sheet steel at about 30 kHz pulse rate.

The SSY doesn't need focusing. It has a nice blast as is. I have another SSY I will build into a real laser system soon. It will be a bit more tame so the passive q-switch isn't vaporized in the first couple of shots like the one in the video was. The input was around 360J...way over the specifications. The flashlamp handled it fine (probably because the coil created such a long pulse that it likely fired two or three times in an instant). The q-switch died on the second shot.

Love the video! What an inspiration for me to pursue further.

btw, can you do continuous shoot; must we wait for the cycle charge, fire, charge fire...

No the SSY laser head was never designed to be CW, it is pulsed only. The doping of the YAG rod is too high to run CW without some kind of hefty chiller system. You might as well just buy a laser head already setup for water cooling if you want to have a CW laser. It just isn't practical to try and cool the SSY beyond just forced air.

ok, thanks for the info. I didn't know it was designed to do a 1-shot firing...
