you should go to ebay....

the diy route will cost you more than 500. i am building one pretty much the cheapest route possible and am over 600 and still don't have software yet.

i am pretty much on the same route as you are. i am still in the stage of getting everything together here my self, but the cheapest that i can possibly come across is roughly $545. this is what you need.

($120)Spaghetti(very good for beginners from what i have researched): Spaghetti

($325) Laser show:(how ever the scanner speeds in this projector are 10-15 kpps so you cant get to advanced with graphics at these speeds) 150MW GREEN CARTOON LASER LIGHT&CARTOON SHOW&ILDA PORT - eBay (item 370384965825 end time Nov-18-10 06:09:10 PST)

($100) Sound-card dac: http://laserpointerforums.com/f47/sound-card-dac-tutorial-40569.html

However there is free software such as LFI player that you can use instead of buying software and you can save some money there but you are limited to what you can do. but you can still draw text and import .ild files for your graphics.

Lfi player: LFI Player 3D Laser Display Software | Download LFI Player 3D Laser Display Software software for free at SourceForge.net

That would be a really nice set up but if that is to much for you to spend and all you want to do is draw out basic graphics and text then buy this dac along with the laser show unit. Now when i say basic graphics i mean very basic! Not many people here would recommend this but if you dont mind any hot spots or sloppiness in your graphics then go this route. with this you would be at $438

iSHOW LASER SHOW SOFTWARE + USB TO ILDA CONTROL - eBay (item 140471046753 end time Nov-06-10 11:05:09 PDT)

Hope this info helps

You buy Ishow and you will want to cry. User interface is horrible and the software adds jumps, flashes and dots some what at random to images. The hardware is 8 bit on the x and y axis, which is a real step backwards in resolution you want at least 10 bits. This is known, making resale value zilch, save for the fact that the hardware is OK and works with Spaghetti.

^You and me both.. and I definitely would say that Spaghetti has come a good ways since it was first created, both in terms of stability and usefulness.. but IMO I can no longer recommend it as a good value. It's Gary's product, though, so he can charge whatever he wants..

Whenever you purchase galvos, many times they include a DMX board which contains simple frames and beam effects. You can control this with any DMX lighting controller.. just make sure that whatever galvos you buy include the DMX board, or contact the seller and ask if they have DMX boards available.

i just ebay'd galvo and galvos, and i only see chips coming up. i dont want a chip. i want a complete unit working. a DMX board is something i have to purchase as well?

EDIT: something like this?

Ahh..

in that case you'll need something that uses true galvos, not steppers. About the only Chinese projectors I recommend personally are those made by LKI. You can email them for a price quote. The DMX card will be built into them from the factory, so all you need to do very basic shows is a DMX controller.
