Okay, yeah. DAC and PC to ILDA interface is the same thing, right

So with a cheap DAC it will connect the scanner up to the computer, correct? And then some free software to make animations is all that is needed?

Where can I buy a good prebuilt DAC from?

Sort of yes.

Computer connects to the DAC via USB and the DAC is connected to the laser via ILDA.

As I suggested, try Norms DAC.

That link doesn't work for me, it times out.

And yeah, connecting from scanner to PC via the DAC is exactly what I want So all I need is a good DAC... if the software can be found for free...

Got a link for the software too?

Righto.

Found the cache of the page: http://ln2.us/c06d13

He's got one ebay listing too:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ILDA-USB-DAC-Kit...d=p3911.c0.m14

But I don't want to risk such a complex project DIY, I'd rather have premade...

Plus, it's only about a $50 USD saving on the other deal, and that's in kit form. The saving would be even less if it was premade. $50 saving compared to $500 total isn't very much, and you get a professionally made DAC with professional software, and a warranty with it...

So still, it looks like the other deal for a DAC is about the same. A little more expensive, but it would be better quality since it isn't just a hobby guy, it's professionally made.

Yeah, well its down to money really.

I will just be doing home shows and shows at family parties and such for now so a cheap DAC is perfect. If your planing on doing professional shows and such get the more expensive one.

And that's pretty much right at all the money I have to spend I really hope the actual auction doesn't get that high... In fact I hope the actual auction stays MUCH lower...

Depends what you want to do with the components if you upgrade them when you get it. The buy now price is 235 but you already have a new laser for it, once thats fitted you can sell the 30mW one for about 50 which will work out to 185 you have spent on the scanner.

Thats how I like to work things out anyway.

Yeah, that's true. I'm fairly sure it's a 30mW analogue too, which is pretty good. I may see if I can use the same driver on my current laser module.

I have a thousand USD or so coming in in a month or so, so it's not like I'm going broke. Plus there is a bunch of work I'm doing which I'll get paid for. So money isn't TOO much of an issue, I just need to make sure I don't spend too much at once and leave nothing for the next few weeks of food, lol

Plus I'm sure I'll be able to find some work for parties at my university. That'll pay it off over time.

Ah well, what's life without spending all your money on something totally awesome to leave yourself broke for a while ;D Why live a boring life with money in the bank when you can be poor and having a great time?

Well said!

My dad keeps telling me, why do I buy things like PS3s and such when a new one will come out after I get it. So I replied why are you buying a new car if when you get it a newer one will come out?

lmao.

Default Re: Scanners on eBay?

Righto, I stuck a bid on this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...:B:BCA:GB:1123

I had a read about multiple bids and it's really cool! Unless 5 more people come and make a bid on that scanner higher than mine, I get it for that price And since it hasn't received any interest and it's got 3 days to go, I think it's in the bag

So 307 GBP including shipping ($570 USD) for a 130mW RGY 10kpps scanner with a DAC and software. Since DACs are so expensive, that's actually a really great deal ;D I can use that DAC and the software for any future scanner project, that's one big expensive thing I no longer have to worry about

I'd only be able to run one scanner at a time though, but that's okay. If I get more than one, the rest can just be there doing beam effects, while the main scanner is using ILDA to create animations.

Question though. It says the scanner comes with inbuilt patterns and stuff. Can I use a DAC and software to change those animations? ie; preprogram a laser show in to the scanner? If I can't, that's no real problem, but if I can that's a bonus

Nope... sorry, but those are on the DMX board, unless it has a flash memory(like FB3) which it doesn't have..... You should rather have built a scanner, its not as difficult as it looks... problem with the one you bid on is that it more than likely uses stepper instead of galvos... It is only 10kpps which will most likely be steppers... but on the other hand you can always open her up and UPGRADE at a later stage...

Have fun and welcome to the world of laser scanners! 8-)

Default Re: Scanners on eBay?

I was planning on just building a scanner initially, but they baffled me with their complexity. So rather than going and spend heaps on parts and getting muddled, I'm getting premade so I can figure out how things work. My ultimate plan is an RGB scanner, and that'll be built myself

(Plus, I'm planning on modding that scanner anyway, like you suggested 8-) ).

Also, it is a galvos scanner, not a step motor scanner, I already checked

And finally, I've checked the pricing on DACs and stuff, and they can be very expensive. This is a professional, high end DAC that comes with its own software (it can run scanners up to and over 40kpps). There's a deal where you buy a scanner and you can get a DAC for much cheaper if you bundle with it, and that's what I've done

When it comes down to it, the main thing I've purchased is a good quality DAC and some software for my RGB, the RGY scanner is just an awesome bonus ;D

Not a bad scanner that, only has 10k galvos but the rest is pretty nice. Nice find

If your going to upgrade it then perhaps rip out the red and replace it with a blue so you have a BG scanner, not sure what blue and green combined would make mind. I think I have seen a 20mW blue around for 200 or so.

The scan speed isn't really such an issue as you are going to upgrade it but that all depends how far you want to go modifying it. I have heard of people buying scanpro20s and putting them in place of the components.

scan pro 20's are a great entry level scanner.

and that looks like ma pretty well made box but i would like to see the inside workings!
if your going to change out the green dont forget you will need to change out the red as well for much more power.
