Hi,

I've been reading through a bunch of threads and gaining bits and pieces of info here and there. There is a lot of good stuff out there, it's just spread out a bit.

I'd really like to build a scanner and have a few threads and links saved that I've been going through. What I've been looking for though is a list of items needed and a basic description. Does that exist?

I've seen a few threads about galvos and different items and what I don't want to do is start buying parts and THEN find out I didn't know about one item that I'll need which is going to cost me a ton of cash.

Here are some links to what I've been looking at and if anyone cares to give some opinions and/or point out any items that I'm missing, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I know there are more items that I can't remember right now, hence my original question. After a brief search at PL, I get the feeling I don't even know what I don't know, and that can get expensive. :(

Ideally, I'd like to do some graphics, maybe simple animation and text. It stands to reason that single color would be easiest instead of RGB and that's cool.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. :)

Galvo's, correction amp, soundcard, laser, driver for the laser if it doesn't have one(http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/FlexModP3.php), Power supply for the driver(Can get a cheap 12v psu off ebay for $15).

Some sort of mount for the laser(depends on what laser you have)

Something to mount all this on also.

Some kind of software(LFI(free), Laserboy(free), Spaghetti($), Quickshow($$$ but no need for the correction amp or soundcard))

Assorted screws, shims and mounting hardware. You can salvage some DB25 connectors off old computer motherboards and printers.

If you go for single color that's about all you need. RGB adds a few more things(dichro's, mirrors, more drivers ...)

Any chance you could take a picture of where the FlexMod is hooked up on it?

Laser with red and black leads for power. Determine the current that the laser is driven at. I did it using 2 different methods.

1. Break 1 of the power leads and insert a 1 ohm resistor, and measure the mv across the resistor.

2. Measure the power of the laser using an LPM, then connected the laser to a lab power supply and slowly turned the current up until I match the original power.

Both methods need to be done with the original driver. Once you have the current, just set the Flexmod according to drlava's instructions.

Thanks Solonar!

I have parts coming from all over and I'll be starting to assemble things soon hopefully. I don't have an LPM so I'll have to go with the first method once I get there.

I'd assume it'd be safer to set the current on the driver a little on the low side vs the high side. I can't wait to start putting this together!!
