you can but ive tied the home built thing and they dont compair to proper ones.
if your planning on spending all this money building a scanner then do it properly

If you have access to a machine shop then you should be able to make them fairly decent, but it may be worth it to just buy some anyway. If you do end up making some, make sure you try to find 64 pitch bolts instead of 32. it will allow for much better adjusment.
