Default Re: LUMIA- one thread for all-

Dan - thanks for responding! I hope to be experimenting with sound and lumia more and more. Maybe you could answer this noobie question - do I need a variance for any projector I get? I'm new to this at a level beyond low-power stuff.... I'm looking for an analogue RGB around 400mw, don't need a lot of power but don't know what the rules are etc...

Thanks.

I'm not as on top of this as I used to & will be again but I recall Hakzaw Len praises LaserKing and has used & promoted several of their projectors. I think he'll be your best source of good information off the bat once he see's this & replies.

Until then, welcome again!

I recommend you add your location. This can help us help you. There are a lot of Chinese non FDA approved pj's out there. These are not usa legal for public use. I just got the wicked laser dock too. It is a lot of fun.. but little features as is. I just got maxwell working with it and the output was fairly sloppy.
I was also part of the laser king group by and they kinda of screwed us out of a model that was different from our order.

Added location, thanks.

I'm very interested in the LaserDock, or the DAC, interesting to hear about Maxwell. Can you tell me more about what you can and can't do? I'm only interested in home use, at the moment anyway, probably that won't change....

I have been looking at the LK-PD2 but now I'm thinking maybe I really want an analogue system....

The laser dock with its software is just a visualizer. You pick a few animations and effect.. then play music. I wanted to get it for when I go camping with a few friends. That way I can just let it be on auto mode.
The laser dock by itself is just a cheaper dac. I just updated maxwell to support the laserdock this weekend. Got a few absttacts dispplayed, but it wasn't coming out very smooth. So I will eventually get the etherdream 2 so I can use maxwell and lsx

Hmmm.... you have a bunch of stuff that I'm thinking about getting - LaserDock (or something else and the LD DAC), Maxwell, and the APC 40 or Mini.... can you control a laser using an APC and Maxwell in real time?

What I'm thinking about is doing a "live" show this way but putting a lumia wheel over the output of the laser to see if I can get some really interesting and abstract (controllable) lumia images. Does that make sense? Ever try anything like that?

Yes you can control maxwell with a midi controller. I have only used maxwell a few hours and wanted to see if my apc mini was compatable. I kind of doubt it. I have an apc 40 back home in portland. I know that works with it.
As far as lumia abstracts.. they can be a lot of fun. Sometimes a Lil messy.. but fun. Lenticular lens gives it a 3d effect. I found the less lines per inch made it made it less messy.

I'm looking for an appropriate RGB/ILDA projector.... I'd like to try Maxwell and the APC 40....

Here's what I've been doing with my new ADJ Hypnotic - the first image is right out of the box, the second is with a second plastic lumia wheel over the output - it really enhances it into a different kind of image.... (my avatar image is from a 30mw green lumia projector with a second wheel on it as well....)

So I'm also wondering if anyone knows where to get a couple of "lumia wheels" plastic or glass.... I have a few but need a couple more. I don't have the facility to make them myself.... they just need to be round, don't need hole in the center....?

The projector I use has 2 scan heads and a set of single mode rgb diodes for each scan head. The scanners are G-120's, very old but still kick butt! One scan head had a rotating piece of textured glass in front of it and the other set is being driven by an analog synthesizer to create the abstract.

That's great. Can you share how you hook up the synth to the laser? That's exactly what I want to do - I have Nord A1r that I want to use as the "driver" so to speak.... not with a LaserDock but a more direct route....

Thanks!

You can hook up a set of scanners to just about anything as long as the signal doesn't over drive them. Sometimes I'll connect the X scanner to a ~30Hz ramp and the Y scanner to the 1/8th jack on my iPhone and you can see an oscilloscope type representation of the music.

I had to google the Nord A1r, very nice looking piece of hardware. I saw that it has multiple outputs, you can try to connect one to X and the other to Y and see what you get. Just make sure to keep the frequency low. The fastest oscillator I use is about 800Hz. Another thing to consider is that the Nord A1r may block D.C. output, which may be ok for higher frequency abstracts but very low frequency stuff will be affected.

Color is another consideration, to start experimenting with a synth the easiest thing to do is to for the laser on constant, either with a switch (if equipped) or by applying +5V to the modulation input.

Thanks for the info. Question if you don't mind - is 25kpps good enough to do decent simple graphics?
