FYI I have a PIC microcontroller-based control board for a 3-motor spiro.. It has three pots attached for manual control, and a switch to select between manual control and automatic control via the PIC. The board also contains a LM317 driver as well to run your laser (although I never used it so I don't know how much current it's set up to deliver).. The board can drive either 5V or 12V motors depending on a solder jumper. Basically you hook your motors up to the board's three outputs and shine a laser on to them and you're all set. You can control the patterns manually with the pots or the board will randomly generate patterns. I'll part with the board for $30 shipped in the US if anyone is interested. I can also post a pic later after work..
