ok this thread is intended to give detail about how good a 10k scanner is, for those who are just starting out.

the cost -

you can get 10k scanner from as little as £45
case £10 from maplin
6mm thick aluminium plate £15
25pin parallel connector £1
some wire and solder £5
and laser of your choice, i would recommend a laser with analogue blanking. IM not a fan of TTL. im using a 200mw green with analogue blanking

so total cost without laser under £80

took me about 4 hours to put togther, thats from start to finish. this is my 5 scanner build so i do know what im doing now.

after running mine for a number of hours yesterday it does need a fan

i hate youtube so please download the videos here and they are in good quality.

there is some flicker from the camera, in real life the scanner does not flicker

10k scanners are great for beam shows they will do pretty much anything you throw at them. as shown in the below video they can do fast/random/mad beam shows

www.laser-man.co.uk/2006/10k/Compound20969.mpg

they can also do slow/smooth beam shows

www.laser-man.co.uk/2006/10k/Compound21832.mpg

they can do simple animations, you will see some flicker on the more complecx animations

www.laser-man.co.uk/2006/10k/Compound22958.mpg

this last video shows the scanner doing slightly more complex beam shows

www.laser-man.co.uk/2006/10k/Compound22494.mpg

heres two videos of the scanner in a large room with the rgb scanner above

any questions?

Sound mate, I am really impressed what ya can get out of a 10k scanner and cheap DAC :D I really hope i can achive something just as good with my 20k's and Soundcard DAC.

I have gotta say a big thank you for uploading videos from UK Meet, I really wanted to come along but couldnt get the time off work. Plus it would have been nice to come with a working scanner. But i aint got a working laser at the moment. But atleast i got to see some of the cool goings on at the meet :D

Nice One !!!

That's a cheap DAC? $300 USD at 12k? Damn, that's expensive. Like twice as expensive as everything else, not including laser.

So, without the DAC, what can it do?

Also, how well can you program the effects? Is it all PC operated?

you dont need a working scanner to attend the meet.

yes thats cheap, your working with lasers here. nothing to do with lasers is cheap.

without a dac it wont even turn on!! this is an ilda projector not a dmx projector.

a dac is just an interface between the laser and the computer the software controls everything.

Ah, I see. So it's not limited on what it can do then as far as creating effects goes? Can you get scanners like this in DMX format?

nope not limited at all.

if you want a dmx scanner go buy an off the shelf, pre made one.

this thread it not about dmx scanners, but ilda scanners.

this 10k scanner set came with a dmx but i have no use or care for dmx. so you can use the dmx that came with the scanners if you so wish

Them 10k scanners look exactly the same as my scanpro20's, I wonder if the galvo's are actully the same, and its just the Amp's that are bigger for the 20k versions.

Andy,

Do you think that you could make an RGB with two of these boxes, the lasers and optics in one, and the DAC, PSUs, and Galvo amps in the other, and just 'attach' them together ?

ummm not sure, its not a strong box at all.

might work

you dont put the dac in the case, you have it by your pc for easy access

That should be good for a screen-show. All you need is a white, fluorescent screen to make blue from violet.
