Default I wonder - backpack portable RGB

Now I have had some experience with these compact RGV projectors, I wonder if it is possible to have the laser assembly in a backpack in a box, connected via fibre to a set of galvos conveinently mounted on the shoulder, for forward projection anywhere. Dump the cheap chinese lasers for something a bit more powerful, and...; imagine:

Your at a nightclub, bored with the light show. You open your backpack, flip the switch and set the scanner block anywhere suitable. The "crappy dmx" display beats anything currently on display in the club.

Your doing a little late night work at the local bar and like the tune your hearing. You pull the scanner block out, sit it on the pinball machine beside you, plug in your FB3 or whatever, fire up the PJ and off you go - bar owner gets a big surprise, he wasnt aware of THAT demo mode on his pinball game. (oh and trust me, making laser shows is so much more fun in the wild, where the music is NOT under your control!)

Sorry this is just rambling - but I bet I could probably do it if it werent for that pesky fibre link!

^ Why use fibers, then ? ..... mount the galvos on a turret connected to the rest with a telescopic tube, for let the beam pass inside it, and when you want to turn on your show, just open the backpack, extend the tube and turn on the unit .....

(BTW, what about the battery ? )

Default Re: I wonder - backpack portable RGB

hehehehehe I forgot about the white fusion kit - that thing can be made so small, who needs a backpack - put it in your pocket. I MUST buy one!

Sadly power would be limited to the most powerful red diode - but make it a bit bigger (brick size) and I reckon you could squeeze a nice strong 640nm in there, a powerful green and we all know where to get blue from. Take current measurements and replace the drivers for the green and red with flexmods, or hack the current drivers for DC battery operation, and mains power is no longer an issue.

Chuck in a set of cheapy chinese galvos and a show player board, and you've got a pretty neat little ultraportable. Alternativly (and lots of people have them now with the advent of the ipad and other tablets), run the entire thing off a tablet pc or ipad.

RC helicopter batteries would make a great power source. RC choppers can suck spikes of up to 150A during punchout (fast climbouts) and constant draw of up to 60. Flight times are around the 10 mark on a tame model, less so on the more agressive "demented dragonfly" models (this is what I call it when they make the model do stuff you wouldn't dare in a real 1:1 aircraft). so your sure to get a decent runtime out of a 6S battery. 2 6S packs across a balancer will run your galvos all night long (especially the big 5000mah packs). Those pack will provide your dual rail 22v. Placing the batteries in series, you take the negative and positive of the two batteries as your zero reference, and use the ends as your + and - 22v. The balancer keeps the cells happy during the show. The third battery is a 5S to run the lasers (18v - should keep the flexmods happy).

The sad part about this litigious world is once you've built your fancy pants whiz bang portable brick or backpack projector, you'd need to case the joint your going to "wow the crowd" in to make sure that your new toy doesnt blind anyone in the place. (not to mention getting the gadget past the door staff!)

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to build a several watt projector in the confines of a (good quality) backpack. Limiting factors would be airflow, keeping the optical table in the right position, etc. It might be more suitable to stuff an small aluminium flight case into the backpack, and just pull *THAT* out, and turn it on

HIMNL9 - I like your idea about the periscope - too tempting to do - especially if you could motorise the turret so it comes up automatically when you fire up the system. It would just be a very simple version of the delivery arm on a surgical laser.

Ya know, its funny when you post an idea when your drunk, then come back the next morning, see the post, some positive contributions, and then you brainstorm the idea

Cheers
Ben
