My arduino mega has 14 ;)

But I would personally say that potentiometers connected in series with the motors works fine for mine. A 100ohm or 1Kohm would probably work just fine. Fans are nice since they are flat and are slightly easier to mount for bigger applications. More surface area for mirrors to mount on a slight angle. Really just use whatever you have though, since both will be fine. And as for pulsing, I don't see the point, it would make lines and isn't needed. Don't overcomplicate it, it's a simple circuit (unless you are trying to do something different).

yea I agree with the guys above. motors are the best option. I tried to use fans but they are too messy. Good luck. I am currently building a 3 motor spiro. will finish it today. gonna post pictures tonight!
