Red face Fog Curtain Homebrew Ideas

I have a small stage that I would love to make a fog curtain outdoor screen for. I have wondered why the screens I see seem to blow the screen UP... against gravity. I would presume gravity assist would be nice and imagine blowing a screen down would allow the cooling droplets to reflect a bit longer. I am new to this- so my ideas may be na´ve- feel free to correct me! I will presume little to no wind- no fighting nature. Do you have any links or ideas to further building a screen for an aprox 12 ft backdrop to get me going?

Default Re: Fog Curtain Homebrew Ideas

the fog juice you may have may be the wrong mixture for what your trying to achieve.
There are different recipes that will do what you want. You can find them on you tube. Different fogs use different chemicals in their make up. There are two different chemicals use in fog. most commercial fog is made out of Glycerin, with the rest made up of proplyen glycol. the best are made from strait pure vegetable glycerin in different amounts. Fog juice is a combination of Glycerin and distilled water some times with a few other components but mostly Glycerin and Distilled water. I make my own..

I made one like the heliodisplay. Used ultrasonic misters inside a small ttank with a pc fan hooked up to a variable resistor to control the speed. Coming out of the 2 liter is a hose connected to a "rail of coffee straws about 3 straws wide by how ever long you want. The trick is laminar flow. You sandwich the straw rail of ultrasonic mist with 2 more regular air rails. (Reg.air/mist/reg.air)
The regular air straws should be coming out of some type of plenum/duct/box. You adjust the mist air fan until you have a desent laminar flow. It will start to make turbulance the farther away from your plenum it gets. Next you adjust your regular air to be a laminar flow. The regular air acts as a buffer for the mist air and helps you get more distance. To get a nice long screen like you want i would imagine you would need 20 ultra sonic misters in a 6' long 8" high 6" wide container about third full of water with a desent variable blower.
Then you would want your regular air straws to be at least 6 times wider than the mist rail to combat enviromental wind and make your mist stay in a laminar flow.
I made mine in a cereal box the screen with one ultrasonic mister was 10" x 8"

Heliodisplay
The heliodisplay is an interactive planar display. Though the image it projects appears much like a hologram, its inventors claim that it doesn't use holographic technology, though it does use rear projection (not lasers as originally reported) to project its image. It does not require any screen or substrate other than air to project its image, but it does eject a water-based vapour curtain for the image to be projected upon. The curtain is produced using similar ultrasonic technology as used in foggers and comprises a number of columns of fog. This curtain is sandwiched between curtains of clean air to create an acceptable screen.Heliodisplay moves through a dozen metal plates and then comes out again. (The exact details of its workings are unknown, pending patent applications.)

So after I posted on this topic I decided to build one 6 feet long.
I ordered 30,000 coffee straws that showed up yesterday for $45.30 shipped to my door. Went to lowes and got 4 furing strips and a sheet of cinnamon beech paneling. My dimensions are 6'x10"x12". I have a ultrasonic mister that I used on my last one before I owned a projector. Cost like $5 on ebay. The rest of the parts are 2 pc fans and 2 rehostats wood glue and a powersupply.Ive got this thing boxed out now just need to glue together 12,000 coffee straws and its fuckin go time.
Total price around $80
Add three zeros to that price and you can get a real one. It dose'nt seem like I02 tech has really marketed their product much since he made it, mostly trade shows and I saw a 50' long fashion show setup. But I'm sure its got mad patents on it so don't think you can make these and sell them to anybody. Personal use should be fine. I just remember a few years ago when the whole knife edgeing thing was going around and you couldnt use knife edges for commercial use.
I'll post the build and specs when im done in case you all want to build one.
