Just thought, if I use a dac and crate my own effects can I simply unplug the dac and the normal effects will be on the scanner still? Or does it replace them?

errr what do you mean.

Its a bit more complicated than that, if you still want to use the stand alone DMX that came with the scanner set and a DAC you will need to switch a number of lines to bypass the DMX when using the DAC and visa versa.

You need to switch:-
X+, X-,Y+, Y-, blanking and supply to DMX board.
