converted computer psu

I fixed my problem. I added a 500mA load on the 5V rail as well and now I can draw large current from the 3.3V rail too!

it seems to me that using atx psu's has its advantages & disadvantages, first the advantage is that most psu's have multiple loads upon them and can handle many lasers on the 5volt outputs usually the yellow & black wires, the red and black wires are 12v, connect lasers to these wires will result in yourlaser suffering a terminal meltdown, the disadvantage is that when psu's are ran un loaded, the capacitors store 400 - 1000 volts, in that they smooth out the transition of the loads, if ther is no load from say motherboard,hdd,dvd, and any other power consuming additional drive then serious overheating occurs, can result in explosion, in worse case senario catch fire,

the solution i found is to visit my local pound store and purchase a usb hub, usb is a steady 5.2v - 5.4v [0.5 m amp] similar to 2x 1.5v AA bateries,
the problem for me is the current at 5v not 3v,

... Seriously? How did you manage to cram all that BS into one post?

1. You have 5V and 12V colors backwards.
2. Whether the PSU is loaded or not, the input capacitors are charged.
3. The input capacitors are nowhere near 1000V. A few hundred at most.
4. These are INPUT capacitors. The low voltage side is isolated from the high voltage side so the 12V rail will never see high voltage.
5. If there is no load, some of the rails might be unstable or a bit noisy, but your power supply will NOT explode from it.
6. USB hubs can not supply any more power than your computer can supply unless they are externally powered - unlikely for a $1 hub.
7. If the hub IS externally powered, there's no point in using the hub any way. You can use the power adaptor.
8. 5V is NOT similar to 2xAAs. The voltage is almost twice as high, and current supply is much lower.

I'm not sure if you're making sht up, or just trolling. But either way, you can have a -2 for that nonsense.
