Hey Folks !

Yesterday i red in the german board "laserfreak.net" about this OpenSource DAC and wondered why no one here seem ever heard of that. The unbeatable price of 50€ (~70$) delivers an great kit for beginners. And the quality of outputs looks not worser than of expensive commercial ones.

linux-laser.org/bilda/bilda-hw.php

This is a page they translated to english
If anyone doesn understand the other pages aks me so i would try to translate it...

The problem I see is with the software. There's only a few mentions of software and a good DAC is basically useless without a decent driving program.

I have a USB DAC based off a USB sound card that pretty much does the same thing and costs a bit less. The driver is also available for several programs now, for example the constantly evolving Spaghetti lasershow software.

I'm thinking the same thing - altough its a nice electronics project, it is still litle more than a bunch of DAC's that need to be controlled by some program on a PC.

As far as the hardware goes it might actually be easier to get a usb sound card and add balanced outputs to that - especially with 5.1 and above sound cards on the market that provide plenty of output channels (and at 16 bit instead of 8).

@ Diachi: Currently i know only that it works with HE-LAsercan and "Poeplscan"
Its the driver... somebody need to code a dll that would support more software.

About hte Soundcard-DAC - please tell more !!!

It's basically just a USB sound card modified with outputs before the output coupling capacitors, to access the raw DAC output, then that gets sent to an op-amp (one per channel) that converts the voltages so they can be sent to a projector

well I was gonna save up an build a super-awesome-lab-laser but I think, that this maybe, just maybe would be MUCH better :)

Yeah, this EzAudDac look great :D ...16bit, mhhh *drool like Homer*

But there are still some negatie points, like messing arround with your windows mixer settings etc - i somehow have fear to destroy the complete scanner if windows should make some unpredicted error-sound :'(

So how about constructing a ILDA-Board based on Soundcard-DAC'S but with a driver that prohibits to be used as sounddevice with anything else then Showsoftware?

To disable all windows sounds, including error noises:

1: Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds tab
2: Set Sound Scheme to "No Sounds"
3: ???
4: Profit!

I have even included an extremely detailed diagram:

On another note, I'm also looking heavily into a cheapo scanner system. I have the laser and I have a computer, so my understanding is that this is everything I'll need to get one up and running:

C-Media CM106 USB 2.0 External Sound Card Box from Dealextreme to output sound signal
LaserBoy Correction Amp to amplify that signal to a ILDA signal
SCANPRO Series 20Kpps Galvonometer System + "Lasershow Player Board"
Appropriate power supplies for each
Some sort of software (suggestions here would be super)

When you build the sound card DAC, one of the key steps is adjusting the op amps so they dont give any more than 5V in a full-out condition. Anything under 5V the galvo's should be able to handle. Afterall, the signals going out the DAC is just audio, and the windows sounds are all sounds ....

Thx Event Horizon (great movie, btw) - i know how to disable Windows sounds ;)

But there are other programms im running normally, so i would have not to use the computer in other wasy while playing a show, that could be unhandy. Other point is how to play the Music? Every Show needs Music :( An i have only One Laptop...

So what would been really usefull is a driver to LOCK the DAC Soundcard exclusively to the Lasershowsoftware !

What you do is keep your laptop's integrated audio set to the default sound card. The show music and any windows error messages will still be played by your laptop's audio chip. Only when you run the show software and select the external USB sound card will it output anything to the galvos and lasers :)

I think that only works on software that lets you select which audio device to use. I have no experience with lasershow software but most other software doesn't have this feature.
