Beautiful RGB Laser Patterns

Hey to all of you, I just thought i`d share this with you as I think it worked out quite well for what it is.

On Halloween I decided that I needed a small indoor show Laser, but I only had 2 hours of time. So I decided to build something very simple, but effective with what I had lying around:

The Specs are:
-300mW TTL RGB module from Techhood (sub 100$! :drool

-Servo with surface mirror glued on top
-STM32F4Discovery with mostly copy paste code as controller
-No music sync yet, just random patterns
-everything (PSU, cable) fits nicely inside the box so it`s easy to transport

Cool! Why are the colors not overlapping? I'd guess the beams that comes out of the module are reasonably overlapped?

Well, alignement is very difficult with these cheap modules. Also because the beams are different diameters. I think when I have time and money for it I should build another one with better overlap (Single mode direct diode...) and maybe a galvo instead of a servo. But this one is just a cheap quick build. I think if you were to do it properly it would be dangerously beautiful

Ah, of course. Makes me even more happy I didn't buy one of these bricks for my projector!

This looks great already, it'll look überawesome if it's done properly indeed.

Hey nice job, this is awesome & thanks for sharing!! I think you should post this in the Lumia thread and share your project there. Hakzaw1 sells lumia kits also, you could add to what you already have if you really get into this.

Other folks have done this with different surfaces, motors, ect and I think your input would be valuable. I personally love staring at patterns like this & could do it for hours. In fact when I was heavily drawn into lumia lasing I found a lot of satisfaction with drastically slowing down the motor I was using. I used to enjoy a 3RPM motor for awhile before finding the morphing & transitioning to be a little fast. With some suggestions & searching from the lumia thread I purchased a 1/3RPH & 4RPH motor to try out. The 1/3RPH was too slow, hardly any movement unless you can stare at the wall for a lonnng time. The 4RPH was perfect, here's one of my vids using the 3RPM motor and here's one with a 4RPH motor with much slower transitioning. Not sure if it's up your alley but I can share links on where to get some slower motors if you're interested

that is one pretty awesome effect, looks like you have a moto throttle on a lumina wheel +1 Out of curiosity how large would you say the area of effect is in the video?

The area is about 2-3m by 1.5m or so. This "reflective type" Lumia has quite a big spread (The Projector was only 2m or so from the ceiling...). I once shone the first version I built on the street from the second floor and I`d say I got about 8 by 5 meters. Also, the way I have it now, indoors it`s really really bright with these 300-400mw of RGB, so making the projection area even bigger should be possible.

thanks for the reply. I've been waffling on using flee bay rgb's in my lumina projector. I wanna get one ready for an on the go test, and i think these would be pretty well suited as its crystal glass and a perfectly aligned rgb would still be out of alignment post crystals... i really just need the light

Well thanks, but no, its not aluminium foil! I think it might work too (haven`t tried yet), but the real "secret" is first aid blanket! take a small piece, make into a ball and then spread it back out. You can also control the "magnitude" of the effect by how strong you fold it!
