5w Green laser show. Any value? (now with photos)

Had lunch with an old friend today and we got talking about an old laser show that his company bought around 17 years ago. Turns out the timing was good and they planned to skip it next week as some of the galvo control boards don't work and they can't get them repaired.

I am going to see it Thursday and salvage the aluminium laser table that the galvos, mirrors and optics were mounted on. It's around 2 foot square and has a stack of solenoids for dropping optics and gratings in to the beam path. Also has 2 galvos albeit the boards don't work so not sure if I can use them. It was  a good system when it was bought and used to write out animations and text on a very large surface so I am sure they are good galvos.

Anyway the point of the post was to ask about the laser. It is around 6 foot long by 18 inches wide and 8 inches high. It has a huge external 3 phase power supply and needs water cooling from mains pressure. I am sure it is a 5W laser but until I see it on Thursday I can't be sure (it maybe more). Does this thing have any value or is it best to skip it?

Wow That sounds like a huge ND:YAG laser that is frequency doubled to give 532 (green) light.

Worth a lot of money if it still works

Naw - not owrth anything - you shold send it to me for proper disposal hehehehehe ! As Tallaxo said, if it is how you describe, you have a goldmine of stuff there !

My guess is that it's an argon Ion laser.  Lots of input for a little out but if it works -----  Hey 5 watts !!!

If the ArIon laser is NG, Someone on Ebay may still want it. A 200 mW greenie into the galvos may still be super. If the price is right - take it.

three phase power isn't exactly something you find around your house. The only good reason to buy this would be to sell it for more... or if you're a professional.

I'm betting it's a nd:YAG.

man i would take that even if i had to get 3 phase installed!!! even if the galvo control boards don't work, the galvo's still should! and a 5W greenie, that is awesome!! deffinately get it if you can!

I will post pictures later as my friend has already taken some. I will get better images on Thursday of the spec plate and the power rating. All I want is the laser bed and the end that holds all the fun stuff. Even if the galvos don't work their were lots of clamps and optics for me to have a play.

well i would pick up the galvo's aswell if possible, because if they do work, they are worth alot of money, and if they work, you could make your own XY scanner!

Sounds like an Argon laser to me too. Especially if it has 3-Phase power. Good find!

it's worth it. even if you do have to get 3 phase installed. ;D ;D ;D

Okay here are a couple of photos I was sent. The second one is the part I want and I hope it is not as bashed up as it looks. Note this was taken out of service a few years ago and when it was the laser worked fine. It was the galvo drivers the were shot. I will get a better look on Thursday when I go pick it up.
