I would have gone with the senkat diode, but I've heard of some not so inspiring results recently. I think the local CompUSA is going (or maybe has gone) out of business. I think I'll make a stop there and see if there is anything left. Maybe I can pick up a burner with a closed can for learning material.

Yeah, too bad about the senkat diodes, but hopefully everything will get sorted out. In the mean time check this thread for the compUSA thing:

Hey, I was planning on making my first red burner(I just finished a blu-ray) soon (when I get enough money to buy diodes and driver components). and I saw these were 20x diodes at only $25! would you recommend getting one of these? I read pretty much the whole thread, and it looks like these are really good diodes. AND all the other drives I find are at least 40 dollars or more...

and will an AixiZ module heatsink one of these, cause I have a spare one sitting around that I could use.

edit: and I just saw that there might be a thread in the DIY and modding section, so I'll look for one there, too. unless somebody here can tell me where it is

Of course you should get one of the diodes. ;D
And you need a heatsink that you can put your aixiz module into, just the module alone won't be enough to cool the diode.

alright thanks

I've never bought a heatsink before(only laser I've built is the blu-ray, which doesn't even make the module warm...), so can anybody recommend a heatsink to buy?

The price of the Sony drive is back to normal. But it is still worth every penny of it due to the ease of harvesting the diode. I know I must have an unusually good diode and I got lucky. However anyone getting this diode will get at the very minimum 275mw's with 420ma's of current using a glass lens. Using an acrylic lens it would be 225mw's. Same with the diode from the Pioneer drive, but again the Sony drive is very easy to harvest.

Just to add another '2 cents', I made two different lasers using the Pioneer 112D open can diodes. Both are running at 420mA's. The glass lens laser puts out 309mW's, and the acrylic lens laser puts out 247mW's.

It is a good deal but from what I have read it requires messing with the heatsink to get it out. Think I will stick with the Sony..it's a pretty safe bet the extraction will be successful every time.

BTW, remember how much I said I hated Lite-On drives? Look at the following picture and you will see why. I know someone else said they could be pried out, but I thought I would post the pic anyway for the hell of it.. ;D

yep, i have torn apart 2 of these LGs.... it wasnt easy, it involved cutting on the heatsink, but once you pull them out, you'll have a heavy-duty red open can and a windowless IR.

it seems that Newegg's Sony NEC OPtiarc drives keep yoyo-ing back and forth in price and shipping... as of this moment they're back to $23.99 with free shipping.
