Do you think that will lower it's life?

No. The T6 die is good for 3A as far as I know. I was using a bench power supply which emulates a battery with zero internal resistance, and it didn't get to 3A until 4.5V. The various voltage drops in different parts limit the current. The problem here is it will always be dimmer than it could be, and it keeps getting dimmer the longer you use it. I powered the driver directly instead of through the casing, and it was 3A at 4V.

There's no current sense resistor at all on the driver board. It's garbage as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, I noticed it keeps getting dimmer. At full charge the beam is very visible, after half an hour turned on the batt is down to 3.2V and the beam is barely visible (but it still lights up the room well enough).
Might not be ideal but sure beats the hell out of my older flashlights :p

I'm probably not going to attempt it but it would be a simple matter of removing the pill, buying a 3A buck driver from DX and using 2x16340, right?

This is why I stay away from single 18650 lights. The only way to get regulation is with a buck/boost which costs $5+ I'm sure. Way more than the Chinese suppliers are willing to pay. I'd just get a 2x18650 light if I were you. It'll pretty much be guaranteed to have proper current regulation. You can always use the LED in another project.

HeNe power meter is good for low powered HeNe....nice find

The lassr makes me laugh. They say in great working order but then that it doesnt come with a PSU and provide no photos of the lassr working.....bidders may want to inquire about this laser before bidding

You can always use the LED in another project.

I have a small but steadily growing pile of cree XML (or similar) emitters removed from various hosts - I'm into building lasers y'know :p - actual suggestions for interesting projects which use them would be welcome
