I have to agree. That is obviously a LaserLands 520nm 5 mW that can be had new for less than $24.00. I paid $17.00 for mine. I hope no one is stupid enough to buy it.

What? You did nothing but put batteries in it and turn it on? Open a case for defective item, they will pay for shipping it back and refund your money. Mine came with an open switch. I asked them to send a new tail cap and they sent me a message on how to fix the switch. I said no and they then wanted me to send it back for a refund. But, I only paid $17.00 for mine in an auction, so I repaired the switch and sent them a message that I was going to keep it, but i was unhappy. They refunded $2.00 in order that I not leave them negative feedback. I'd have done just that too.

I just got my 16 dollar 520nm today and it works fine.

After using it at night I may pot it up by bridging the diode with a piece of scotch tape and drilling a couple of holes through the heat sink to the left and right of the diode ( above and below the board ) and twisting/pulling it out the front, it's case positive and has a ground wire, then adjust it and press it back in with an automotive socket.

Here's some pics, it's definitely a bluer green than a 532nm, I like it.

I noticed that too when I got my 520nm LaserLands pointer switch repaired. I took out a 532nm 303 pointer and defocused it so I could put the spot from the 520 inside the spot of the 532. Looking at it that way made it look nearly completely blue.

How did you get yours apart? Mine is stuck and won't budge.

I couldn't wait I had to pot it up a bit so I cheated and drilled a hole carefully over the pot and made sure all cutting debris were blown out including any stuck to the inside of the hole, I have some clear heat shrink that's the perfect size for a snug push on fit, it makes about a 3mm wide by 1mm thick beam that is definitely more blue, I just turned it up a 1/4 turn clockwise and it looks like about 30mw, if it lives I'm happy.

Funny light comes out the backside of the diode as you can see through the clear heat shrink.

Ohh the white plastic spring board is just glued, it pops out and rides in a grove just don't pinch the single negative wire when you screw it back together, case is positive so no wire for that.

Okay. So, you never got the center section apart. You pulled the battery spring out of the end where the tail cap screws in. Right?

Correct, so I could see where the pot was on the board, I was going to pull the heat sink out but decided against it, I could always peal it out and put it's sink/driver into another host so I just drilled above the pot, it's in the ribbed part where the case is the thickest.

What technique are you guys using to drill it without letting debris in? Mine is the old model that unscrews easily but the pot is very hard to access anyways.

I blow the cuttings away as I drill lifting and pecking then stop when I can see the drill tip has poked through and finish slowly trying to keep anything from falling in, then blow out the inside from the battery end to be safe and inspect for any cuttings, look at the backside of your hole from the battery end and make sure nothing is hanging, if so use the pointy tweezers or what ever you have to clear it all away. If you get cuttings inside use gravity and air to blow them out.
Tap gently to knock any sneaky bits loose and blow them out, but I try like heck not to let any in to start with by pecking at the hole and clearing the cuttings before it cuts through.

People with the older version that unscrews have either had, or made a tool to reach the pot without having to drill at all. You want to turn the pot clockwise to increase its power. That was my plan before I got it and found I couldn't access it that way now.

I don't have a drill press so I used a hand drill with a sharp drill bit at low speed. It kept the chips larger. I drilled until I barely got a hole through all the way and then finished drilling it upside down still at a very low speed. Mine unscrew s aswell and I took a paperclip that I straightened out and used pliers to bend the tip at a 90 degree angle and used that to catch the edge of the pot and spin it. I only drilled mine to show that it could be done for those with the sealed units.

Can someone explain this?

It is light being reflected off of the lens assembly making it back into the unit through the notches on the casing of the laser diode. Removing the lens causes this backscattered light to go away almost completely.

The diode's back plate has some flat edges where reflected light off the lens can come through a small gap.

This laser has a ribbon style beam but focuses very tight in the far field, I am going to buy a couple more of these if I can get the same deal.

----EDIT----

No I know this is not a 1w diode but for 16 dollars I love it, I didn't know these 520nm directs could focus this tight.

I don't know how they make any money on these.

My cheap camera is not good at detecting color differences but I can sure see it, the 532nm on the left has a yellowish tint.

8 dollars and 16 dollars, yes both pot modded but still, how can you beat that, and they work. I am in danger of getting a bigger 520, I don't need it.....but I always thought 532 was such a perfect emerald green, I must admit I like 520 better as far as color and this beam is not bad at all.
