I am unsure as to even what the point is in posting an eBay find in this section if you re going to bid on it. I am secretive if I find a good deal on something, and I plan on bidding.

Well, I was quoting the OP and the way it was presented by Hakzaw when he created this thread. I think the general idea is to say, "Hey, I found this and I'm really interested in it. Unless one of you wants it REALLY bad, I'd like to call dibs." But so far in my experience, in nearly every case on here, it has been worked out amicably and in a way that kept any LPF members from being involved in running the price up.

Also, I think it is assumed that someone calling dibs on something is also doing searches and stumbling across other items that he/she is posting here and not claiming dibs on - so they are saying, "I post a lot of good stuff here, but I actually would like this one myself if you guys don't mind."

Again, I haven't seen any instance where it hasn't been worked out before bidding so that everyone was happy and bidding didn't get out of hand.

It is just a way to alert a group of people that are likely to be interested in something that you are interested too, and to politely ask to be able to get it without bidding against them.

No one is demanding that you don't bid. They are ASKING.

I think the logic is this... A lot of the stuff you might be interested in is very specific stuff that only a small number of people would be interested in, and a reasonable number of those people might actually be right here!

So by alerting your fellow LPF'ers, you can ask that hey not bud against you or at least get a feel for what they are willing to pay or how badly they want the item.

It isn't perfect, but it gives you a chance to actually communicate with some of the bidders, which is an advantage you do not usually have on eBay.

If you keep it secret, then you do have a chance that no one will bid against you. But there is also the risk that you might be in a bidding war against a friend from LPF who would have been willing to let you have that item without bidding against you.

That actually makes a lot of sense; I never thought about it like that. Laser-play's community is not a huge one, so it makes sense that many of us search for the same items on eBay. I haven't been on this forum that long and am still learning how some things work around here. Nonetheless, it's a good strategy!

99% of my finds I do not bid on. I post my finds for LPF community.

I feel the same way. But I see others don't:( To each his own.

This is, for the most part, a pretty cool community.

I read this thread as an attempt to consolidate all those "oh hey, look at this eBay deal" threads--especially those that refer to a low starting bid as a "good deal" when that is subject to change. As for dibs and all, my mindset is that you post an eBay deal if you don't want it (or have already bought one) yourself for everyone else to try for. Then others can claim dibs to prevent competition. Using this thread just to reserve eBay auctions for yourself is kind of like an evil patent system that doesn't even allow people to "innovate" off the discoveries you make public.

So in that regard, I think my own policy regarding "dibs" will be this: if it's a self-dib, I will not respect the claim if it comes up; however, if it's someone else placing dibs on a deal someone else posts, I will.

I forgot to mention this eBay item yesterday. A couple of years ago Laser Genetics manufactured a "hybrid" of sorts between a flashlight and a green laser. It is called a laser designator, or rather a laser flashlight, and it contains a green laser pump with a hand-controlled linear optical collimator. It is freaking bright, and can be seen from miles away. I've used one before but never owned one, although eventually I'd like to get one. Anyhow, these usually go for $250-$300. This eBay listing's starting price is $110, which I think is a great deal as long there aren't many bidders.

I agree. It's a pity, isn't it?

And if they ship it, the cost is usually more than the PSU itself. Huh...

Over on another forum Andrew(Dr Lava) has a sale going one with some very interesting items. 150mW473nm lab (make offer) three Pro LPMs- an osilliscope= some dual red modules- and Kryton Grooves(red anodized) & Smoothes to name just a few.
Not allowed to give you a link tho...

ATM I have no plans to buy anything--I want all of it but my wallet sez-NO WAY.

BTW I dont bid against other forum members unless I found the item myself-
on my own. Thats just me-
My feelings are that if I post an item and say I am bidding that while some may take advantge of me 'finding' the item first, more will be nice and just say- 'Good find and good luck --let us know how you did and about the item once you get it'-
