Is the PL450 or the PL450B better? Whats the difference between the two? Reason I ask is because I mutilated mine last night trying to put it in a host. I ripped the pins out :(

The 450B is better, however I bought one from techhood back when it was $50 for a "450" I sent him an offer of $40 and he accepted. However, I sent him an email afterwards saying I thought I was purchasing a 450b, not a 450, so if he can send the B version, or cancel my order if possible. He told me the non-B version is no longer manufactured, and so all they send out is the B version.

Essentially, the B version is rated for slightly higher power output, according to manufacturer specs. I don't know physically what has changed between the versions, different contact area, more/less gold wire connections, etc.

So what kind of current can we be looking at now for these B diodes?

This looks interesting. $45 for a Melles Griot HeNe Laser 10 mW with power supply, RED Beam. Im not bidding!

Edit: I was also looking for the PL450B online and noticed the price had dropped to under $40 in many places inc ebay and they all include free shipping, so that would be especially interesting for non US buyers.

NEW OSRAM 450nm 80-100mw Blue Laser Diode/Single Mode LD/TO38 ICut pack/PL-450B | eBay
OSRAM PL450B 450nm 50mW-80mW Blue Laser Diode LD Single Mode TO38 iCUT 3.8mm | eBay
NEW OSRAM 450nm 80-100mw High-Power Blue Laser Diode/Single Mode/PL-450B | eBay

Lazerer too, is selling them for the same price! Osram PL450B 80mW 450nm Single Mode Blue Laser Diode

I'm really interested in the melles griot laser, just wondering, they mean 14w instead of 14mw right? just like cuz of the ebay rules...

No. HeNe lasers rarely go over about 20mw. I think there was one that could do 100mw and the tube was something like 1.5 meters long. Argon lasers can reach 10+ W and C02 can reach 100s if not 1Kw or more.

Eh, they go quite a bit higher than 10W. 20W is still fairly easy to find. A couple hundred is the record I think. The Grand Coulee Dam has 60W worth of argon (2x30W) for their light shows.

Yeah but how much would you be spending on a 10W Argonator?

Man... that just makes all the lasers I have seem just so... less.

It really depends on model, location, condition, accessories etc. Usually somewhere between $1000 and $5000. The difficulty for most people is setting up three phase (sometimes 480V) and water cooling lines.

For grins and giggles I tried bidding on that yellow hene and chuckled at the ensuing bidding war. It sold for a little less than what I paid but I don't mind since it helped an LPFer in need.

I saw a couple in the 10+ watt range on flebay last night. Most of them cost $1500+ (more with PSU) and require 3 phase 208/220/440 power which is next to impossible to find in residential areas. There's an ArKr there that I'd practically mortgage a kidney to get.
