Well, a 6x read probably has a decent diode in there, maybe the 803T... but for $125, not worth it. Something to consider if it's ever down to <$40-50.

HEY you know what I've wondered??? The GGW model also only has a 6x READ speed. I think I'm going to buy one of these and see if we might actually get lucky. They might have the same diode, as it doesn't really seem very cost effective to order two different diodes and use two different sleds. I could be wrong, but for $125 I think I'll risk it and check it out.

Can't wait for your results man, though I agree with you on the part of it not being cost effective to have use two diff. diodes, wouldn't puting such a powerful diode in just a reader be a bit redundant or overkill?
anyways can't wait for your results this could open up a new chapter in the blu-ray field!

It would be a bit overkill, but think of it on a manufacturing level. It makes more sense to only manufacture one sled, as even a lower powered diode probably costs them ABOUT the same. Add in the man-power cost of manufacturing two totally separate units. Whereas if they use the same sled, the only difference would be the internal circuit board. A much easier change.brtaman said:

Yeah from that perspective it is true, but I was always under the impression that the sled makes up most of the price for the manufacturer, then basically the only thing separating this drive and one that costs 2x more is the ability to burn, this is controled by the chips and ram module (buffer) on the pcb through its sata/ide/etc. connection to the cable...lilke you saidSo from a strictly technical sense, it wouldn't make sense,
But then when we take marketing, supply and demand, market driven price, man power, RnD costs...you do have a fair point actually...lets hope your theory is correct and you dont end up spending all that money on a 803t equal or even a 811t.

I agree with your logic, I have seen this sort of thing in corporations many times, I am sure it is much worse in the electronics industry. We assume the power of the diode is the limiting factor, when it may just be marketing.
That being said, still too risky for my blood, you are an animal GG!

I really dont know what I'll find. Put it this way, If it is the same diode I wont be surprised (but I will be happy!), but if its a different diode I wont be surprised either. Either way I'll be able to make something out of it, and we all have to take risks to discover new cheap things! Just think of the first person that decided to try to use the HD-DVD sleds instead of the PS3 blu-ray sleds. At the time, HD-DVD sleds were 20-30 bucks more expensive, and for all we knew they did the same thing.
