Host flashlights maybe.

They seem like a great possibility for a host. I have heard that the multiple LED lights aren't that great for DIY's unless you replace the circuitry. But it's always worth a try! Thanks for the find.

I'd be wary getting those as hosts.

For the regular 9 LED light: Most plenty-5mm-lights don't have space to fit a laser. Whilst the board with the leds might have a large diameter (depending on the number of leds), it's usually not very all - just height of the LEDs plus the board. Mounting a laser and driver in those will probably be a pain.

The one with the intergrated 5 mW laser might be interesting, but only if that laser is a 5.6mm canned diode, and removable. Many really really cheap 5 mW reds use odd sized lasers, sometimes just a bare laser chip and a resistor to limit current.

Agreed. The 9LED light is almost exactly the same thing I have here, and at a price of $4US each or $2.50ea in bulk of 24 total. There simply isn't enough space for it. You'd barely be able to fit the front of a housing at all, and the design is so cheap that it would be a nightmare to adapt it. You'd need to solder or weld washers, new springs, and various parts to hold it all together.
