Hey Folks,

I just scored a set of used Laser Optics (on mounts) on eBay for a best offer of US$30 at this link: http://stores.ebay.com/Meredith-Instruments I think they have 20+ more to sell and a lot of other parts including Liquid Sky scanners etc. I figured that even the mounts alone were worth that price.

Check it out if you're in the market, all you breadboard owners.

Cheers, CC

If I were to make a portable YAG laser gun I would need to buy the cavity and the rod.Do I need the cavity optics and frame too?I'm not really sure how these work...And I assume from the description that the cavity does not include the flashlamp, so I would have to buy that separately? And what power would that be able to output?

Sorry Switch,

I'm just a buyer who thought others might be interested in the ebay auction. I don't know anything about the other stuff they're selling. Most of it's outta my league, so maybe post your question in the "Experiments" section quoting that link and maybe someone with some technical acumen will be able to answer you. Good luck with the photon gun!

I got mine for $20 :D That was in an auction though. some of them are useless, but there's a dichro (pass green and blue, reflect red at ~45 degrees OR pass blue, reflect portion of green, reflect red at 20 degrees), a couple front surface mirrors, and a really nice meniscus focusing lens with some sort of AR coating (passes ~99%@808nm and 650nm and ~96.5%@532nm) and a focal length of 7". In case you can't tell, the optics are glued to the mounts and removing them without chipping is all but impossible.

Overall it's a great deal.

Thanks Cyparagon!

I had no idea what I was buying, but I figured the heavy-looking mounts alone were worth purchasing because they look like they'd stay put when aligned. (no breadboard here)

I appreciate you breaking down what you got, I can't believe there's a dichro in there for that price! I'm glad I took a chance on it.

CC -- I made a bid on a set. Might be fun if that Dicro is the same as Cypar got !!

Good on ya, Mike!

I went for the "Best offer" option on mine because I hate losing out to bots at the last second and I really wanted the mounts. Now I'm dying to see what I get. Luck of the draw? I'll let you know when I get 'em. Canada Customs is really slow these days, so who knows when they will appear.

Good luck on the auction! ;)

In case you're wondering, the long yellowish one on the right is the dichro. The two just to the left of that are made from the same glass, but unfortunately aren't long enough to pass a second beam through and even if they would be removed from the mounts, the coating of glue on the back would hinder the passage of light.

Hi Folks,

Well I got mine yesterday and did some experimenting with them and well... no dichro. The longer glass bit on mine has some kind of reflective coating which reflects yellow if white light is reflected from it. It will not pass a beam of any colour from the back, even my 200 mW. All I get is a bit of scatter where the odd photon punches through the coating. It does seem to reflect at a different angle depending on wavelength though. I shone parallel beams of green and red at the long one and they diverged about 8 feet out, so if that's reproduceable, that might be handy.

As Cyparagon said, the best bit is the huge focusing lens which does indeed diverge at about 7" and makes a great burning lens. The others are lenses which distort the beam into either a horizontal or vertical oblong shape. The two matched versions of this did a great job turning the oblong beam of my Pulsar 125 onto a nice round beam. (I shone it through one vertically and positioned the other at 90° to the beam axis, effectively correcting the first and rounding the beam nicely)

The little mirrors will come in handy and I may use the nice little solid mounts to hold other bits as they stay put rather well. So in all, a good deal for the $$$. I have some dichros coming from Max's GB, so no great loss.

Maybe Mike will score the dichro!

I'm fairly certain all lots are identical. Are you sure? Perhaps you've done something wrong. Here is mine passing 100mW from the rear:

And 50mW with 200mW red to make yellow

Thanks for the pix Cyp,

I can't see the large versions because I keep getting an "SQL exceeded 5 user max" error, but I can see enough to see that it's working for you. My glass seems to be frosted on the back with a smoother section where the glue was applied, but not, of course, optically smooth. Here's a pic of my piece, and a shot of me passing a beam through the "smoothest" section from the back. As you can see, all I get is scatter.

I guess you lucked out if yours is clear on the back! I've got dichros coming from Max's GB, so no biggie for me, I just hope Mike lucks out too!

Cheers, CC

Damn, that's no good. That's the same coating that's on my two smaller ones that render them useless as dichros. Do the two smaller ones have the same coating for you?

The coatings look identical to me. The back is totally glued even if they were different. No biggie, because I've got dichros on the way anyway.

They will come in handy as wee mirrors for an experiment I'm planning soon, so it was still a great buy, IMO.

A little heat will soften the glue. Took off a small FS mirror for my projo.
Maybe 250 Deg F
