I'm kind of ambivalent on those. On the one hand, I'd love a stable 473nm pointer that doesn't mind crazy temperatures.

On the other hand, a $600 diode is a big investment to put in my hands (or any other, more talented builder's), for only 20mW of 473nm.

But I really want one.

One step closer.

It's like the 445nm diodes and 520nm diodes all over again :D I can't wait.

What I would really like is 488nm diodes to drop in price.

Good find BP, I missed that while browsing PL.
+rep when system allows.

If I had the bread, I'd snag one. Also waiting on those 488s to come down. Unfortunately the only thing I can see those being used for is to replace argons in a medical environment.

Even then diodes don't offer the stability of an ion, or DPSS, so they might not even really last too long. There's no point to building this except to replace their DPSS and ion variants for labs. No point to the hobbyist or someone looking to build or sell a laser, that doesn't have a Dr. in their suffix slot.

I'm hopeful, but not optimistic that these will ever be available outside of such occasions like this deal, or similar other ones that may happen in the future.

Therein lies my quandary. :(

That being said, I'm not too up to date on the uses of wavelengths. Still though. 515nm, 488nm, 473nm, all new diodes that emulate ion and/or DPSS.

I'm sure there are a few applications that don't require precise conditions such as those provided by ion and DPSS, they will probably switch to diode. If anything, a 473 diode will be MUCH more stable than dpss. However an ion replacement diode, with it's WL variance, who knows.

I just don't see a laser company switching to these for personal lasers. Also, at such VERY low powers, a PJ company won't either.

If these ever go into 500mW+ then you may see them. Doubtful though.

Really wish I could pull the trigger on these though, just hopeful another opportunity comes by eventually.

We should raise a quick donate topic...
Hell i would donate $50 to see it go pop :D

If ARG is running it with spectro and lpm measurement like the pl520 torture then I'm in!

Well I doubt these will be cheaper again, so I feel like that'd just be a money pit

I'm in. I have better equipment for this now too :D

Should I create the thread?

That's what they said about the 520nm diodes :p
600$ is a lot to kill, but if everyone pitches in 20$ it's not much to each person.

Out of curiosity, why would we kill one? Each one already comes with a datasheet on its specific properties, and with only four out there right now, it seems counterproductive to murder 25% of them.

Or are we just doing it to say we killed a 473 diode? :p

Maybe that's it. Maybe it's like an exclusive poacher's club where you only kill the most endangered creatures.
