Fiber-coupled 473 nm blue laser + fluorescence probe | eBay

These look like more B&W Tek units

I payed $75.00 for one of these and it was working model so this would be a good deal if it has some output.

There's more than 10 available... that would be a good price for someone to buy up a bunch, fix em up (remove the fiber couplings), LPM 'em, and resell them at ~$90ea.

They're only 3-5mW, but if they're TEM00 without the fiber, that is a good price. Besides you can usually remove the PD and get double output.

removing the fibre gives you bad divergence, but if you use the guts of a dead laser pointer (a green one, the lenses) it can be tamed right down.

the fiber makes it multimode. the output of the head can be tem00. these are back up again too btw....
is the coupling easily removed leaving just the head?

My bad.I missed this part.. We have not verified TEM00 performance without the fiber attachment

Mine is not multimode as are all the ones posted here.

Default Re: $55 Fiber Coupled 473nm Laser

yes it pops off no trouble. Unscrew the fiber and you get a beam thats temwtf, and super huge (tennis ball size at 3 feet). Then remove the fibre coupler - this has 3 screws. (the little pointy bit, not the entire PD assembly). Then you get a beam thats tem00 with about 8mrad divergance. This can be sorted with a lens on the inside, and one on the outside, before the pd pickup assembly. I havent done this yet as I have not got IR goggles yet.

thanks for the info. i'm waiting on some ir goggles now too so i can go into the one i bought and tighten up the beam. that head had already been aligned by drake and it gets about 30mw of tem00. i want to try my hand at it with a "new" unit. might be something useful in that probe as a bonus

The beam diverges so much from these that you can actually use a single positive lens to correct the divergence. Just place it one focal length out like you do with a diode's collimation lens.

so if I had a 4mm FL lens I'd just place it in side the head behind the output aperature? (assuming the distance between the crystal and the aperature is 4mm)

i guess when they engineered these the divergence wasn't an issue. i've seen a fix using the expanding lens from a 532 along with it's collimation lens or an aixiz. right now i get a spot ~4cm at ~3m. i'll have to measure exact before i make any mods so i can compare results. the beam exits the head Very thin, i think i can get to a good value when i correct the divergence. once my goggles arrive......

Default Re: $55 Fiber Coupled 473nm Laser

Yep pretty much, but the farther out you place the correction lens the better correction you can get. It basically forms a beam expander. Your positive lens forces the beam to become parallel instead of heavily divergent and since beam diameter is inversely proportional to divergence you get a smaller divergence the more you let the beam diverge before correction. I use a 28cm (yes, centimeter) positive AR lens I picked up off of ebay for $10. Inside the head the beam diameter is so small that you may only see a 1 or 2mRad improvement. At 28cm out I get it down to 0.57mRad.

Default Re: $55 Fiber Coupled 473nm Laser

Me too, I'm bloody hopeless with lenses and optics, but I am amassing quite a nice collection!

I will eventually play with them later when I finish my projector, and then get a lower powered (50-100mw) lab laser to stuff around with lenses with.

(my 473 died. I might buy another further down the track. Carelessness on my part )
