i saw this yesterday what type of diode would it use, it would be really cool to have 1 watt of 405nm light

Must be a multimode diode, the output looks a lot like my 60 watt 808nm. Definitely interesting though :)

Is it just me, or would a couple of 8X diodes combined with the Jayrob/LarryDFW lenses, etc plus one of HTD's beam combiners be a hell of a lot more compact, reliable, and less finicky for $550-600 complete?

I wonder what the end use was designed to be, if they took the beam from round(ish) to rectangular?

Yeah you could build a setup for 1W of 450nm with two 8x's with Hi-powered lenses and a PBS. It would cost around 500 like you said but you would get a nice tight beam (as long as the lasers are adjustable to align properly.)

Whatever the asking price is, it probably includes more than the naïve part cost summary it is being compared to. And for reliability, using a redundant array of inexpensive diodes happens to be one of the best ways to achieve it, as long as you have the optics to put the beams on a single optic axis.

Conic-convex (Axicon) lenses, echelle gratings, fiber bundles and a large number of other schemes have been successfully used to combine many beams on a single optical axis so far, and quite a few of those are well within DIY range, so I'm not entirely convinced that using two of the most expensive diodes out there to lower the cost of the optics will be particularly cost effective, once you figure in the time you spend assembling it instead of using it. ;)

Dude this is from 06-17-2009 1 watt 405 doesn't exist from 1 diode
