It's not what you're thinking, guys ::) ....I said husband because I'm a woman. Yes, believe it - or not (as in Ripley's) - there are women who collect lasers and are into lasers. I can imagine it would be rather unfortunate to have a spouse who isn't into lasers or actually disparages the hobby.

Nice to have you around Schreken. It's obvious you're serious about this hobby as master of "the Beast", so I'm sure you'll be a great addition here. It'll be good for the single lads to see that it is possible for women to like lasers. They do so need a thread of hope. ;)

 You're the only woman (besides Marianne and BeautySoulQueen) that browses these forums, how does it feel to be one of the .1% of female posters on here? ;D To be honest I wonder why lasers attract 1000 times more men than women, I don't see why a difference in sex would make such differences in hobbies :D

i blame marketing - think of commercials on tv for little boys vs little girls, the differences are scary

I think lasers are a guy thing. I mean, the difference is HUGE! like 1000 to 1? You can call that 1 an exception.I know there are some stuff that men are naturally better at, and some stuff that women are naturally better at and laser shouldn't fall into that category , but all those "naturally better at" things aside, there still is a huge difference between what men and women usually do. :p We're not all that equal yet.

Btw, what's your age? Like 37? :-/

GET A NEW WIFE!

I thought Porsches and yachts were expensive enough. If there is a force on Earth that can come close to a black hole, that has to be it! You never know until it's too late! ;)

OTOH, I have a dog that loves lasers now! ;D

Perhaps it's because (especially online but in other media) laser companies don't seem to want to advertise on sites that draw predominately women? Marketing is certainly part of it, though. Another thing is that only recently have young girls been actively encouraged (rather than discouraged) to study the sciences in school and go into traditionally male-dominated fields like engineering and many other sciences. When I was in 10th grade I had an awesome female science teacher who helped spur my interest in science.

However, despite my interest in science, I was (and still am) better at art and so I became a professional artist (+ I'm not at all good at math!). Personally I think my love for art is one reason I fancy lasers - in college I studied color theory and the physics of light, so for an artist (of either gender) to be into lasers isn't too surprising.

Also, when I worked in that laser machining shop, there were a surprising number of women there - in the shop itself and not in the front offices. I'm guessing that about 30% of the laser operators and techs were women, including my direct supervisor who ran a 5kw welding CO2 laser.

So positive role models are also important in what interests a person develops as he or she grows up.

Here's a link to my company site if you want to see some of the artwork I do:

Schrecken - interesting art  I don’t think too many women would find some of that particular type of art attractive! [smiley=evil.gif] But I do agree with you though about different strokes for different folks. It just kinda hurts when you see a man who can’t change the spark plugs on his car, or when you see a boy who can’t change his bike wheel. Men are supposed to act like Men. And Women are supposed to act like Women. But who’s to actually judge?

I don’t believe it’s confined to any specific influence, like media, parents, or society etc. I believe it ultimately comes down to choice. I’m not saying that these external influences are powerless because their influences are quite great, but only one can choose “truly” for themselves. What I mean is every member at this forum has a unique liking and respect for lasers by choice. At any second, someone can decide to “kick the habit” (Which does happen around here, look at the “Buy, Sell & Trade” board topic) and maybe impulsively, or conscientiously up and sell all their lasers/optics and gear. There are many reasons why/how people make decisions. I believe those who are true to themselves and make choices from their hearts are stronger then those who are still trying to figure out what’s cool, or accepted, etc (which is why some people have beef with WL around here! (Manipulated advertising)).

In regards to my thoughts: In conclusion, I believe there are hobbies/endeavors that are better suited (in general) per gender. For some examples: construction, auto mechanic, garbage, landscaping vs. hair stylist, secretary, cleaner, nursing, home mom. Not related to the difference in genatalia, but perhaps an overall stronger body and the physical demands of the job vs the discipline, knowledge and patience required for others. That doesn’t mean that there are no women in construction, or auto mechanics etc., and that you don’t see male nurses, stay at home Dads etc, not saying one is harder then another, just different. However, it ultimately comes down to our personal decisions of what we wish to do as HUMAN BEINGS that makes us who we are. I choose to like lasers. I choose to hate T.V. So to you Mr. Lawson, you choose to make your wife unhappy because you choose to make yourself happy with your lasers! Now your decision making approach which will determine how you solve this issue (I’ll be looking for your RPL in the Buy/sell/trade topic! ;D J/k!).

Schrecken, I don’t want to single you out just because you’re a woman, but I think it’s totally awesome that you have a liking for lasers and you are a member of this forum. ;)

Hey Schreken, what happened to that awesome Avatar image of yours? It was a great one.

Which one? You mean the blue laser? I just changed it to the Beast a few minutes ago. I might put that one back up at some point, though, or other pics of my blue laser.

You know you're a laser enthusiast when... you refuse to get married so that you can save the wedding money for a lab laser.
