Why is my DX200 green laser doing this?

I have only recently noticed my DX200 18650 Green laser doing this in the picture. My laser is the baton style from DX.

It still burns well, but not as well, due to using it heaps so the battery is starting to lose charge, but notice instead of being a nice unfocused dot, if I unfocus it I get the image below.

It focuses to a dot for burning and for infinety, but unfocused on a wall get the image below.

I have only notice it as the battery has been getting flatter, but notice it will start of as a nice unfocused dot, then the image change to the above.

But don't have any trouble focusing to a dot to burn anything, I had burned a match over 5 feet away, but cannot now due to battery needs a charge.

Here is what the laser beam looks like unfocused.

Focused looks like any other laser a nice point of light.

I do notice these lasers have a little bit of slop in the focusing.

Its mode switching. When this happens the beam is no longer coming out centered. The warmer it gets the more off center it will be, and it hits the edge of the aperture making the ring you see. I bought 2 of the 50mw and one of them doesnt even project a beam, just a circular glare

Make sure all your lenses are clean, i had a green laser with a similar problem. I cleaned mine and it went back to normal. Just check you lenses first ;)

No Starts of as a nice round dot, then a second later shifts, so don't think it's the lens

It's not the lens, its modehopping as mentioned before.

Green lasers often develop this problem when too hot or running off bad batteries. If it still does it on a normally charged battery and at room temperature, its defective and you should return it. It's close to impossible to fix this yourself.

If fresh batteries doesn't fix it (make sure they are fully charged), you have a problem. I don't know of any way to "fix" a mod hopping laser if power fluctuations aren't the problem.

Peace,

i would try new batteries first ... then maybe try and make sure it isn't some kind of heat problem... then i would complain

There are a few approaches to fix mode switching, but it requires a complete break down of the unit and reassembly. The only way to get those units apart is destructive. The brass module inside is paper thin and trying to coax it out of its glue will just break it. You could try unscrewing the head and put a pile of thermal paste on all of the exposed metal parts. It may eliviate enough heat but probably not.

** Is it happening only after a few mins running or does it happen from a cold start?

Happens from cold start. When I turn it on starts off as nice dot, but a second later shifts to the one on the picture.

I would contact DX. In the ones I took apart, I found that the crystal set was small and is being driven hard with a 500mW pump. Another famous hit or miss china design :-?

How much time did you get out of the laser (total use)?

Would be 2-3 days. The battery new had about 3.98 volt according to my mulitmeter, now it's 3.75 volt and does not burn as well now.
