What happens to IR in water?!

Hi I was wondering what happens to the IR emitted by a green underwater.

This green has quite a focused dot of IR and at 20cm is the size of a 1cm dot (by the look of it).

I was wondering what happens when you take the laser underwater- is it safe? or is it dangerous and the water somehow reflects the IR back?

smidsy.

It should act pretty much the same as the green in the laser acts.

IT GETS WET !
(sorry, just had to !)

The Water will filter out and attenuate lots of different wavelengths - but you should google it, and REALLY read lots to find out the exact amount - I don't have figures with me, but I know I saw it somewhere when I was trying out burning things underwater....

Or you can shine your laser through a glass of water at your camera and see if it get's filtered and if yes, how much. ::)

I don't think the IR will be reflected, unless you shine the laser at water, like the surface of a pond or pool - then some will go into the water (depending on the angle) and some will reflect. If the laser is in the water, then the IR will propagate out like the green light.... water slows and refracts light but near IR and visible light can still pass thru it.

Something far IR like a CO2 beam wouldn't pass thru water - it would just vaporize it.

so a generic waterproof greenie is safe underwater?

If you stay away from the surface, it's as ok as any laser. :p (meaning that it can reflect off of the suface but it won't magically make a turn and hit you in the eye)
