My Viper 125 puts out an average 125 mW when the temperature is right. As I recall, Optos often out above spec.
I have to say that my Viper 125 is about 2 years old, little used but older technology.

I've actually heard of the more recent 125mW Vipers outputting at ~180mW at times. I plan to check mine after getting my Laserbee I just ordered.

To the question: I think that the Viper is better quality. Dragonlasers seems to make sure their lasers are higher quality than others but it does lead to pretty high prices. I think a measure is also the divergence of the laser. The beam of my Viper is probably the narrowest beam out of any greenie that I've seen. Compare all the specs if opto gives them to you.

Haha **edit** I'm selling my 125mW Viper actually. I'll sell it for $220 shipping included (Dragonlasers is +$30 shipping fyi)

Hmm

Is it just the divergence/width that's the issue here? Can't that be solved with a cheap focuser or something?

No that cannot be 'solved'. i have a viper 125mW and i absolutly love it and the divergence is amazing. it burns very well because of this. i have no experience with opto at all but can tell you i love my viper and all CNI made lasers however i belive opto is FDA approved and alot cheaper so it depends on what your going for, but if price and legality were not an issue for you id personally recomend the viper.

EDIT: dragonlasers shipped my viper to MD USA for 17.99 ~ nothin personal swim

i belive opto is FDA approved I too, believe the CNI, (DL is a CNI dist.), is the nicer build, and I offer them in my CNI GB and they average 175+mW with a nice tight beam, BUT Sorry, neither is compliant! and in the USA that sure could become potential problem. Glenn

Am I right in thinking that the opto would go further anyway, and for short range stuff I can just hold up a convex lens?

Once upon a time, before generic Chinese pointers became so prevalent, threads would regularly be posted in the "review" section of this very forum detailing the performance and quality of the CNI pens.

If you want to see what I mean, go back a year or two in the review section.

My first "high power" laser was a NOVA X105 (equivalent of the Dragonlasers 95). To this day, I have never owned any green laser pen built as well as the X105- and I have been through many.

The price of the CNI pens offered at NOVAlasers or Dragonlasers is quite a bit higher than of those offered at sites like O-like, Rayfoss, and even Optotronics, but remember that you get what you pay for.

Optotronics specializes in the high power portables, not the pen-size pointers.
You wouldn't go to a burger joint for a fish taco, would you?

Sorry, but none of the "Pen lasers" over 5 mW and lacking a "on" indicator, and an interlock AND having a FDA ascension number , are FDA approved or compliant, so, none of the Opto or CNI pens are compliant or approved, None! (save for <5 mW of course) -Glenn

Yeah but again, I don't care about it being FDA compliant.

I want to know if the Viper is actually worth the extra $100

This is a question to all those with the opto 150:

Does it burn with enough intensity (at close range) to be able to...burn stuff that one would potentially want to burn?

Note: I'm not some 12 year old obsessed with burning stuff, it's just this will give me some sort of indication as to wether or not I should buy it over the viper.

Yo! I have two of the Opto 150's and the beams are exactly the same and diverg the same. One is 156mW the other is 165mW. They both burn my leather wallet from several feet away the instant the laser is turned on. As with all lasers, the object has to be dark in color or opposite of green, like red or pink. A color that will absorb the energy of the laser light. But beware, they are very bright. I am very satisfied with my >150mW lasers.

Okeydoke thanks you guys, I think I'll go with the Opto.

I suppose if I have the desperate compulsion to burn something thick, I could always use my glasses (I'm very long sighted).
