i want to make a green laser that is simlar in looks to a lightsaber. I have a host with a custom heatsink that actually looks like a lightsaber hilt. hwoever, i am trying to decide on the power modual from olike that i want. i want a really bright beam, like 100mws, but i dont want it to be insanely dangerous. also, 50mw modules are much cheaper than 100mws. any suggestions? im going to use a piece of transparent plastic to make it apear that the beam is contained.

Hey, that sounds like a fun idea! The 50 should create more than enough light if the beam is contained in plastic, plus it is cheaper and HOPEFULLY wouldn't destroy the plastic ;)

Is the plastic completely transparent? Would the beam freely pass through the plastic?

well, actually, thats a nother thing i was trying to figure out. I was going to use a plastic rod that wasnt for the beam to pass through. it was to support a black coated cap that will absorb the light from the beam, and make it look like the beam is contained. the beam will not actually be shining through the plastic, nothing will be enclosing it., as i still wanna use it for star pointing adn such.

Oh, ok, I think I get what you mean. Obviously at night 50 mw would look great for your lightsaber. The 100 mw would be neater for inside events....whichever you use make sure to post pics

i definitely will...... Ill think about it...i am working with another guy, so well seee....
hmmm
more power=more money=more fun=more dangerous :p
less power=cheaper=less danger=safer eye sight

I'm not sure on using the 100mW module considering its high power and risk of burning whatever you put on the end of the saber to contain the beam. Why dont you get a stick of green plastic that is frosted? I would think that the laser would light that whole thing up! 50mW should be plenty at night if you ask me, but you could try 100mW, i just suggest not using a black cap at the end considering its light absorbing properties (burning). Hopefully some of the wiser folk in here will fill the rest in. Just my 2 cents.

I'm really interested in how this turns out, keep us posted!

actually, the reason for the black is that it will cause the least amount of dot reflection, and will trick viewers eyes into thinking that the beam just suddenly stops in mid air. Also, most green olike modules arent focused for burning, and they arent easily focusable, so the black probably wont burn. the hilt is coming in the mail soon. thanks jake21!!!!
