thinking about buying a green from dx(bought 1...

a little bit late I suppose since they wont ship anything but 5mw now...

is there anything at all you can do to mod the 5mw pen style they have?
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.91
I think I've seen aixiz modules stuck in that pen case... (for a red or blu build after I break it haha)

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10092
this one intrigues me because I can see the diode pins and what appears to be a screw thing holding the diode in. could it be as simple as putting in a new diode?

thx for any info

Re:  thinking about buying a green from dx

the only thing i can think of to make just a lil stronger is to turn the small potentiometer/screw... ull most likely get about 10mws outta it... n making the life of it shorter

think i got my true 50mw green laser from there at the right time... n my 200mw red... u can always just make a red or blue laser...

if this http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10092 ever broke id shure as hell make a new laser outta it... should be good

Re:  thinking about buying a green from dx

yeah I kinda liked that one because I can -see- the diode pins, and can imagine it will be easily taken out. I'm just wondering if it is as easy as swapping the ir diode...
I'm glad I got the dilda in time (and found this place) so I have a nice host for red/blu

Re:  thinking about buying a green from dx

Im gonna have to get one off of here from a member i guess. Seems the cheapest way or even a kit.
I hate they don't ship to the US. That sucks because i was looking them over for a while and didn't even know the customs\FDA prob.

unless someone makes one that you can mod, I guess the only way to get a high powered one is if dx starts using google checkout....

Or, you can buy legal green lasers from any number of other sources online. DX is not the end-all-be-all of green lasers, there are several places to buy high powered green lasers that are perfectly legal to import into the US.

You can go to another company, and buy a 600mW green portable, handheld, battery powered laser and import it into the United States perfectly legally.

Re:  thinking about buying a green from dx

that description sounds like it would end up being the size of the first cell phones... haha

I ended up buying the dx one that uses one cr2 battery (sku 10092) since I didn't want to wait for the pen style ones to get in stock (since those were getting bought more since the ban)
it turned out to be a nice pointer, brighter than I expected (I was somehow thinking it would be as bright as a cheap keychain one you can buy for 5 bucks in a store)
I'm thinking about writing a review unless someone else has, it seems everyone gets the pen style 5mw greenie instead...

I have to tell you.  I ordered two 5 mW lasers.
This one  http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.91
and this one http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2511
I have discovered that the second one is much better.  It is brighter and it has a thicker beam.
CR2 battery also last much longer than those two AAA batteries in SKU91.
I even wrote a feedback for 2511.  I'm really happy with it.  It is sort of heavy duty laser and it's just much better than the SKU91
So I would recommend going for the SKU2511

Re:  thinking about buying a green from dx

what do the innerds of sku2511 look like?
the one i got is a "new wish" brand, it works fine off one cr2 except it dims randomly... still trying to figure out why.
it also seems to have a lot of metal around it to act as a heat sink...

resizing random pics for people's sanity...

the back clicky is nice but it can go on in your pocket... I need to fix it.

there is a thin brass spacer in front of the module...

Re:  thinking about buying a green from dx(bo

the inside thread diameter on the greenie is a little larger than the dilda oddly. the end cap for the dilda will fit on green, but the green one wont fit the dilda.

for some strange reason it seemed like the endcap for the green was causing some random resistance spikes in it, that pressing the button in hard solve... it lead me to testing things with my multimeter...

nothing between the multimeter's probes shows 0.3 ohm
the green's tailcap has a through resistance of 1.3 ohm. the tailcap for the dilda measures 0.6 ohms

it seems like this might be a way to make it "5mw" by adding resistance to the tail cap... i sure wish i had a laser meter.

is it normal for one of these to be cold blooded? when I leave it in my car it gets chilly to the touch, and when I use it it turns on bright for a second, then dims significantly... after a while it seems to be normal

a few hours of tinkering and I've found most of the spilled green around the dot can be fixed by blackening everything in front of the lens like the face of the module, the inside of the spacer, and the inside of the front part of the heat sink. they reflect around and make some lines coming from the dot.

That sounds like my DX30.The cause for it is probably just bad crystals, or bad or unstable allignment. ::)

Re:  thinking about buying a green from dx(bo

the button thing was bothering me, I really didnt know why it had that much resistance... so I pulled out my desoldering braid and went to work at the blob of solder on the thing.

I found that under the blob was just a metal disc like thing with two pins sticking out that were folded towards each other. I couldn't get it much further apart because of the epoxy like stuff on the sides....
heres a pic of after I re-blobbed it.

oddly enough, after it started to cool but was warm, I checked the resistance in it again and it measured dead zero  after it cooled it went back to 1.0 (a little less than before...)
