I think using tinfoil or thermal adhesive may be a slightly more permanant spacer.

Also, I recently got a 150mW module from lazerer and the front lens was loose and out of focus when i got it.
I recommend o-like for modules.
Oh, and Brendon do you have lasrr safety glasses?

I will use tinfoil but would gorrilla glue work instead? and I have safety glasses

OK I see lots of very bad advices given here...

Ash, just when I thought you were finally taking this thread into good hands, you bang the "11.9 or 12mm difference" thing :D
See, it's wrong...

Everybody who said that diameter matters is wrong.

All green laser modules marked as 12mm, are made to exact same standard and deviation from it, much like Aixiz.

The actual specific diameter of Aixiz modules is 11.85 mm +/- 0.1 mm, which game me terrible headaches when I once wanted to make a pressfit heatsink for Aixiz, I destroyed two before actually taking calipers and measuring 7 different Aixiz modules.

So the actual answer to question, "Does .1mm make such a difference" when talking about machining tolerances in heatsinks and width of modules, is totally negative.

Now, to get the thread on the right track...

If any of the dimensions of the module would matter, it's total lenght and spring lenght.

Even if the module you buy is few milimeters longer or shorter, you can still compenate for that just by pressing it more or less into the heatsink that's already there. Also, when battery hits the spring it bends it for 2-3 milimeters, so even if you miss by a milimeter or two in your pressfitting, it DOES NOT MATTER one bit.

Even in the worst case scenario where the module is a bit too long to fit into the host, you can always do some custom work on the host (widening, drilling a bit deeper holes) that the fitting of the module did not take care of.

Even if your module was 13mm, and you buy 12mm, you can still make it fit somewhat, as suggested you can have soem aluminium foil wrappings (quick 'n' dirty) or get a new custom heatsink made for the host by me or maybe other forum machinist geographically closer to you.

as for the heatsink i only need the ring part it would need to be 18 mm diameter on the outside and the inside would need to be 12mm (duh lol) I can pay for shipping if you want and i could probably send u the one i have now and/or the entire laser host if that helps :)

If you want you can send your entire host, yes - that way I can see if I can upgrade the entire design of the heatsink inside.

I am pretty sure it might be similar to the Classic host I had a chance to make a heatsink for, you have the link my in my signature, in red. Original design was also like yours - 18mm wide right with 12mm hole in it for pressfitting the module.

I can change that, have a much bigger heatsink in your host, and module secured by a set-screw so you can change them out anytime with no trouble.

If you're interested, shoot me a Personal Message.

could you put the laser module in too?

Yeah sure, no problem, if you send it along.

I do not have any green modules on hand right now, sorry.

I dont have any but if you want i can order the one from lazerer and send it with the host. How much will it cost for the heatsink and installing the module?

Well since heatsink cannot be over 25mm in width as far as I can tell,

that'll be $10 for the heatsink.
Shipping and installation of module are free, since they last 2 seconds and 3 seconds respectively.

All? No. :yabbem:
Most? Yes.
I have encountered several 532nm modules that were too large in diameter to fit into a tapered pressfit host.

Looks like your "DIY" turned into a "send to Croatia and pay for a service".

Mighty nice of you.
Is he going to send the whole host so you know at what depth to install the module in the heatsink for (-) connection? Oh, and isn't this a side-clicky host?

Task itself isn't much of a DIY learning material, unless you have a lathe.

Am sure that OP will have plenty more opportunities to assemble his own lasers made from scratch, which is far better than just fitting a module into a heatsink.

I am not sure if the host is side clicky or not, but in either case it will not pose a problem to upgrade the heatsinking design. It's what I do ;)

it is in fact side clicky design when i send the laser there will be the button and a plastic peice inside the plastic peice goes on the chip for a better fit. The button is pretty obvious. I will also send a battery and the module--as well as $10 i will just need your address and i will send it out as soon as I get the module from lazerer ok ?:eg:

btw i am fine with paying a tiny $10 instead of potentially destroying the module. Also how long does lazerer usualy take to deliver to US ?

I have a few 16340 batteries on hand, you don't need to send that.

I'd advise you to refrain from sending batteries out during very cold months of they year, as they can die off from the cold (not a joke, quite literally the chemistry inside it fails due to sub-zero temps).

I will send you a message with the details :)
