I've bought 5 of those 405nm pointers so far and they're all overspec and high quality construction with an aixiz acrylic lens; burn like mad when focused. Since starting this thread the Super Beast 006 has been almost fully characterized and we've seen the release of the Super Beast 100 which has been fully tested at this point also. Output plot w/ IR for the 006 by Arshus:

As you can see it perfomes nicely with a 3.7v AW RCR 123 battery, with a max at 64mW and average of ~45mW.

This is a graph plotting the IR output of the superbeast having the beam travel through my goggles on its way to the thermopile. Max of 19mW, although you can pretty much see a steady 19mW of IR light throughout.

So in conclusion, thats 64mw Total max, with a 19mW IR max, so then (19/64)*100 = 29.6875 so thats about 30% IR on the Superbeast 006. Not too shabby, anything from ebay thats less than 40% IR is cause for celebration :beer:

Another 60 second plot of the 100 by elite ares, this time w/ IR:

Here are some LaserBee II plots from my Super Beast 100 done today. The first is another 60 second run and the second is a 60 second run filtered through 532 glasses to see how much IR gets to the thermopile. It was higher than I thought but still only about 20% of the total output. Not too bad for a sub $30 532.

Peak at 143mW then hovered around 140 for a while.

Peak IR was 28mW and averaged about 26mW.

Review of the IQS Deluxe #200 532nm by Arshus

This is an excellent Laser considering its cost, and ease of access.

First Some pictures:

Looks like a nice brass heatsink on the diode, looks like the lens was glued onto the diode window with a white substance.

Now onto the Beamshots:

Very nice and solid beams.

This is a filtered shot of the "Dot" on a wall, provided for your viewing pleasure.

I provided another dot from another IQS laser for comparison. The #200 dot is on the left and the right is my IQS $8 pen pointer. You can observe that the #200's Dot is quite peculiar. It seels to have a rather large rectangular shaped artifact next to the laser's beam, and then everthing is inside a projected "circle". Whether the recangular artifact is part of the beam or not I can't say, if it is, then this laser does not operate in TEM00. However I have a feeling that its just an artifact and the dot is where the vast majority of the laser's output lies. The problem here is that while powerful, it doesn't seem that 100% of the laser's light is making through the aperture window. More analysis is needed, I need to cover the rectangular artifact up while shining it on the thermopile and observe if the total output decreases significantly.

And last but not least, the famous LPM Charts:

This laser was tested using an AW RCR-123A, fresh off the Pila charger putting out exactly 4.20v.

As you can see the #200 performs very nicely. It peaks at 201mW and stays there for a good 13 secs, and then averages ~185mW after stabilization. It has about a 90-120 sec duty cycle. Its outputting about 15% IR, which is excellent.

Overall your paying $0.50 per Mw of 532 output, and its a very good deal. I'm sure this puppy can pump out more, but tweaking is needed, maybe another battery.

Thats it for now, I'll run some more tests and report back.

Did you look at the reviews for this seller's "<5mw" 405nm pen lasers? They've been reviewed here and are known to put out ~50mw. I've got 5 of them and harvested the diode from one.. I've driven it to 90ma easily. HIGHLY doubt that the Super Beast is a <5mw laser. I mean come on.. it's the Super Beast :evil: I'll have it sometime this week.. so I'll compare it to my 100mw green; unfortunately I don't have a LPM yet.

Yeah I am curious to see how good it is. He is a good seller, I have bought 3 lasers from him and they are all great! WLaser and itemquickship are both good sellers.

Yea.. I found that seller from posts here and I know that several of us have purchased those purple and green pens from him. IMO that Purple pen for 7.77 is a freakin awesome deal for what you get. When I ordered 3 of the purples in one order he threw in a 4th for free, which oddly came in another package the same day. I'm very optimistic about the Super Beast!

"super beast" is not a quantitative measurement, but "5mW" is.

^True, but listing a portable laser as being over 5mW will get your listing pulled 9 times out of 10..

@ Cyparagon - LOL.. We know . Another thing that we know is that the "5mw" 405nm pens that this seller has are ~50mw.

Today is a great day. My son was born today at 8:04am, healthy, weighing 8lbs 4oz. Got home and the Super Beast had arrived; it looks like a good build quality for the price and I'd bet that the output is >15mw. I'll give a review of both and post some pics when I get a minute :yh:

Beast came in today.

Came in brown envelope in bubble wrap. Here it is compared to 405nm pen:



End cap had some paint overspray on it. Easy enough to sand off:



Charged battery using 3.7V charger. (4.2V cutoff)
Pulled out battery at 3.8V.
Popped it in and --wow--



Battery didn't last but a few minutes, dropping to 2.75V.
POS battery.

I will have to buy a charger and battery to use this pointer.
2 Tenergy batteries and charger cost more than the pointer ($22 shipped @ batteryjunction) :yabbmad:

OK, as I said, my first child and my Super Beast arrived the same day.. needless to say, I didn't really have time to post a review. :yh:

My first impression of the Super Beast was that it was definitely over spec. I figured that it was right around 50mw and with the results that ZapU got it seems as though that may have been a good guess. It sputters when cold and then gets significantly brighter; after the short warm up period output remains stable. The unit was still cool to the touch after running for 5 minutes in a cool garage @ approx 60F. The temperature, as measured by infrared thermometer, was approx 1-2F higher than ambient. Below you will find several beam shots.

The physical build quality is very solid and it has a nice heavyish weight of 107.5g with the included battery. The rear of the unit unscrews to reveal the battery compartment; the threads are course but feel good. There is a rubber o-ring installed. The unit is approx 110.4mm x 28mm in size; this is a short but fat host.

The included battery, CR123A, appears to be a non-rechargable/primary rated at 3V and 1300mAh. There is both a 3.0V and 3.6V version of the CR123A rechargeable, known as the RCR123A; I will be purchasing a 3V version:

At 18.99 shipped I would say that this a very solid deal. I highly recommend the Super Beast as well as the seller (see first post)!!!
