I noted the same thing early on .... you really need to hold it firmly to get full power. I really wish I could remove the pressure-switch and replace with a toggle ...

As I apply pressure mine goes from dim to bright and then back to dim :undecided:

Im not complaining as it was cheap but its definitely a flaw

Heh I was just browsing his latest offerings and saw this listing

Deluxe Adjustable Blue Laser Pointer Deal For LPF Burn - eBay (item 110645153776 end time Mar-06-11 23:21:46 PST)

The title gave me a good laugh.

Oh and thanks for the input on the batteries. I might go for the lower voltage higher capacity battery for my greenies from him.
I noted that in my IQS Roundup link ... but it is good to see he has dropped the price. If he sells those well, he said he can probably get the 400mW version ...

Anyone else get wild mode hopping? I know they are bargain lasers but mine will some times sit as low as 7mW on fresh li-ion batteries?! I was able to get a reading up to 51mW but then it quickly dropped down to 40mW. When I first click it on its super bright for a fraction of a second and then dim again. I thought it might be my batteries so I connected a wire to the spring and hooked up one of my LarryDFW sony 18650s which have high drain and still it metered something like 30mW. Is mine just a dud?

My #200 does 180-200mW continuously no matter what batteries are in it. I've only tried various 3.7v rechargeables though.

Was it originally WAY-overperforming? My original #100 metered at 165mW, then after I left it pointed at a black plastic lid for 5+mins (lost in the ceiling-reflection of the melting plastic), it started to dim; I let it rest for a min (but not long enough) and it started acting like you describe -- bright flash, then dim-dot. I emailed IQS about it, and he scolded me for not respecting the 1-min duty time (to paraphrase Susie of O-Like), but then offered to replace it anyway.

I'd email him -- what could it hurt?

I don't get much hopping from the Beasts but I do with the pens that he sells. The pen starts in what looks like TEM00 then hops to TEM01 after a few seconds. Bright as hell in both modes.

I just got the #100 beast and I have to say I'm a bit dissapointed. My cheepie "5mw" pen is about as strong as it is from what I can see and the point its self with my beast has a 2 inch circle around it once it gets to 20 feet or so. I'll post some pictures later.

Sounds like it's focusing lense got rattled in shipment. His EB post says to contact him with questions / porojects -- please do so as he's always very responsive from my experience.

FWIW, both of my #100s (one at 80, the other at 130-160) have a very well focused beam that is still pretty small at distance. I will measure tonight.

Just ordered a Super Beast Green Laser Pointer 5mw 006 Signal yesterday. This will be my first laser other than the cheap "cat toys". Ever since seeing a green laser at an astronomy class my son was at, I've wanted one but was afraid of getting garbage. I know next to nothing about lasers, I'm more into lights and spend most of my time over on CPF and CPFmarketplace.

Do you think I made a good choice?

Good choice for a pretty good quality, inexpensive green. Remember that this is way over spec; not <5mw. The #6 denotes ~60mw. Obviously this is not a cat toy. Also, this laser is not IR filtered but luckily the measured IR is very low and closely collimated with the green. You will probably want to grab some safety glasses that cover 532nm, at the least, if you plan on pointing at things other than stars. If the safety glasses don't cover 808nm IR, which cheap ones usually don't, then you'll still want to be careful to not directly expose yourself to the unfiltered IR. I believe others have added IR filters as they are fairly cheap, the front of this laser will unscrew, and a small one will fit nicely.

Can't beat it for the price imo.

Damn Sampson, thats a good idea, the #200 outputs about 25-30% IR, and with that size host an IR filter will easily fit. I'm gonna try it. Of course, once I install it the laser's total output will be reduced, but I'll still get about 130-150mW of pure green, which is very nice.

I just disected my SB #100 to diagnose the switch problem. The little black plastic button support has a shelf on each side that slides onto the pc board. There is also a little tab of self adhesive foam stuck to the outside of the button support as a shim to take up the extra room since the support looks like it was designed for a AA battery host. The foam had collapsed and flattened and the sides of the shelves are deformed like excessive downward pressure from the button was exerted on them. That would allow the pc board to flex down as pressure was applied to the momentary button causing light or intermittant contact. I never pressed the button THAT hard to cause the observed damage.

I did however send the laser to another LPF member for his evaluation. While he had my SB, it began exhibiting strange outputs that would begin strong then rapidly dim to barely visible. It is very doubtful that he would have caused that damage. Since I was not in control of this laser for the entire time, I decided to open it up therefore negating any liability to itemquickship for warranty purposes. I went ahead and ordered a replacement module for it. When I put it all back together, I will report back.

Just got mine today. It says <50mW. I cautiously tried it inside, the length of my house (50ft or so) on an "antique white" wall and it is too bright IMO for indoor use. I haven't tried it with my AW16340 yet, only the supplied panasonic. Looking forward to tonight outside and also planning to order glasses. Thanks to all for the warnings and suggestions. Obviously I don't have anything to compare it to but for $19 it's great for me.

Night time finally came. Definite visible beam and very noticeably brighter with the AW16340.

Just got the replacement module and installed it. Preliminary tests show it outputting 115mW, with 21mW of IR, about 18%. Have not run it for more than 30 seconds yet and haven't done a plot either. We'll see how long this one lasts.
