Spyder III Krypton Laser – Power Readings and Battery Current Draw

Did i read ( I measured 1680mA's battery current draw on high. (steady) )

My o-like 400mw draws almost 2 amps

Yes that is correct...

My Optotronics 425 also draws near 2 Amps, but this Krypton is drawing 1680mA's at full charge, and is putting out 730mW's.

But it will start to draw more current, as the battery drains and starts to drop in voltage...

Wtf was wicked thinking sending this laser to a 13 year old kid...

Mind you after sending him an arctic before that it looks like.

Even KipMGay is not that irresponsible.

I demand at least 1 W when they advertise it as 1 W. Fu**ing loser company, they never gonna fool me.
They are once again proving how retarded they are by advertising it as the most powerful laser on EARTH
Give me a break. Get a life WL

Sorry for the threadjack jay, looks like you got a nice unit. I'd love to have a 650mW handheld but not from WL.
Nice detailed review btw :)

Most Chinese companies do that... DX, Dino, and about a zillion other ones... Their all underspec.. why expect anything better from WL?

If you shine a WL at the moon do you need to wear laser glasses because of the retro-reflector? :p

Why does everyone love KipKay so much anyway? All he does is take things apart and do even stupider things with them.

Also rereading the review... it looks like the laser is not IR filtered, even though they claim that it is...

Someone please correct me - I could very well be wrong - but playing around with IR filters myself, I have not see <10% drops in power, from IR filtered lasers after an IR filter is added into the equation.

Well not a real review, but just some power and current measurements...

Some other observations too.

But at least my post may answer a question or two about it...

^^^It does. It is also by far the best "review" currently out there imho.

:thanks:

One more thing worth repeating, is that even though WL has a ton of bad rep, and even though it is not 1 Watt as implied (mine anyway), I still like it better than my RPL 425...

And I paid over $1300 bucks for my RPL.

That does not mean I think it's better just yet. It just means that at this moment, I like it better. If it lasts, and proves to be durable, then I would say it is a better deal... (IMO)

I guess only time will tell.

Unfortunately history has shown us repeatedly that Wicked does send out underspec units. Somehow I also doubt that you would be able to get any kind of support for an underspec unit. That's not to mention all the other issues.

For your review, can you please test for IR a bit more... or test how much passes through 532mn blocking goggles?

Ok well I'm no expert at testing for IR, but I did measure output power with and without an IR filter in the beam path and posted those results in the first post...

But obviously some power will be lost going through any additional optic.

So I just did another test with some 532nm blocking glasses and my camera. I have looked through my camera at an IR diode before, and it is amazing what the camera picks up!

Anyway, I saw nothing at all coming through the glasses if that means anything...

I'm not sure you could consider it "under spec." After all, it is advertised as "500-1000mW" if you care enough to read the specs. We already know that the "1W" is just a maximum. WL's target demographic is primarily teens and young adults that have less than basic knowledge of lasers. They won't know the difference between 500mW and 1000mW of green light. Hell - you could probably give them 300mW and they would still believe it's 1W. :shhh:

@Jay, I second the IR test. In case you didn't notice, I suggested a couple more methods of testing to be sure of the IR content:

Depending on the IR filter used, you could potentially lose quite a bit of power from the 532nm beam. I have two filters. One is from CNI and passes 99% 532nm and blocks 99.9% 808nm+1064nm (according to them) and the other is from a digital camera. This one passes about 90% 532nm and blocks 100% 808nm (so far as I can measure).

P.S. Despite the overwhelming negativity in this thread, all that matters is that you are happy with it. ;)
