Skirting Eekbay restrictions?

Anybody see these on Eekbay:

Check out the answer to the question asked at the bottom of the GM100 auction. I'm wondering if the seller is passing 50 and 100mW pointers off as 5mW to get aroung Eekbay's restrictions. They are priced about the same as some DX pointers but ship from the USA. Might be worth looking into.

That's become a common tactic since ebay began cracking down on pointers over 5mW, so it's very likely that these are more powerful lasers being passed off as 5mW.

laserlands makes you message them to get the mWs.

another tactic is to add a removable 'fat beam' lens or grating.

Couple of things.. Last year there was a china seller
of 532's that was selling 50mW (approx) as 'toy' 'gift' 'party favor' etc.

IIRC they were some how held responsible, shut down and fined. Cant
remember the details, but the powers that be, tried to make an example out of them.

Ebay also monitors and reads the messages to and from sellers that
carry lasers. I tried selling over 5mW and when I answered a potential
buyers question as to the output, within minutes the auction was pulled...
Mind you they also monitor sellers of anything really if they suspect that
you are trying to make deals outside of ebay etc. Anything that circumvents
any portion of their policies or fees is a target..

I dont agree with listing a 3b as a 5mW, its just stupid. People looking
for a 5mw for their kid or actual pointing in public use can injure themselves
not being aware of the true hazard.


Regarding 'fat beam' or diffraction gratings, ebays policy is that of 'point source'
greater than 5mW. Its just a matter of them looking into it, and pulling the auction.
If they want to pull it, they will find a reason. It just depends on weather or not
it crosses their path IMO.


The majority of lasers pulled are usually a result of it being reported by another
ebay member. This would account for 90% of the listings getting pulled.

I hear that occasionally other sellers 'report' listings just to give their competitors problems. NOT FAIR!!!

I got the fat beam info from a site that said using that included lens made their over 5mW laser into a legal under 5mW green.:shhh:

Once you are on their 'radar' they will keep an eye on you for a while. Sending someone $$ as a gift when it was not asked to be done that way could turn out to be no favor at all. One guy paid for a laser as gift- then put in the 'notes to seller'

I sent the seller a question and just got his reply:

Me: What is the difference between this pen and your $8.22 pen?

Seller: This pen is more powerful and thus the brightness is very different.

I bought a 200mW Greenie laser from this guy:

for about $80.00, Im actually very satisfied, although I dont have an LPM, it seems that it actually performs at spec, as it burns red matches unaided, and w/o paintning them black, instantly. Also, it seems to have an amazing duty cycle as ive used it for 2-3 mins constant duty, and there doesnt seem to ever be a decrease in brightness. No parts move around in the host and seems to be all in all an amazing laser for the price.

The beam is very visible outdoors at night and indoors in dark to moderate lighting conditions. However I have my doubts...the beam diameter must be very small as the beam is extremely thin. Also, the dot is TINY. This may be a contributing factor to its amazing burning power, could this be a lower power laser somehow built into a permanent focus? I'm fairly new to lasers so I don't even know if this is a possibility.

Well, I was curious so I went and bought this one. He dropped the price now too I see. Here is a power output plot from my LaserBee II:


Bought off Eekbay from emall2011, peaked at 84mW then settled to about 30mW on a 1 minute run. He has a GM100 for $24.99 shipped which I would also assume is way overspec for a <5mW pointer. :na:
