can you see the full line of the beam with this laser when its dark inside or out?
Thanks Reaper

Nice to hear you got one!

I'm interested in peoples experiences with this laser, i like the proper heatsinking it seems to have. Can you run it continously, or does it dim due to warming up anyways, like the dx pen-style lasers do?

I don't see why one of the resistors leading to the pot couldn't be exchanged for a smaller resistor for possible more output though. May or may not be a risk worth taking.

Personally, i would recommend against that. Laser diodes can fail due to excessive output even before running warm at all. Without having a datasheet for the pump diode used, setting a arbitrary current limit yourself is rather risky.

Speaking of current, can you measure how much it draws from the battery?

Just a few starting tidbits here. I'm sure others will chime in as theirs are received. There is a lot more metal around this LD, so perhaps it can dissipate heat better.

Cant help but thinking about modding it! There are (or were) plenty of high power IR diodes on ebay...

Except... does it have enough pump crystals, or would it oversaturate? or whatever? xD (I know you can only get so much green out of so much crystal)

Wouldn't it make an awesome host though? I wonder if you could even simply do a red laser in there... Dunno how its set up ;)

why no rechargeables?

Rechargable lithiums usually give 3.6 volts or so, compared to 3.0 for primary cells. Perhaps the driver can't handle the extra dissipation, though if it is properly controlled, it's probably just a precaution.

I doubt it would be -that- simple. The problem is that the green has the solid state laser an doubler crystals, and the optics are designed to focus their output to a beam. Obviously focussing the pump diode is undesirable in a green application, so i think it'd take quite some tweaking to use the existing optics with a red diode.

Jon,

Any chance of getting some high res macro shots of the front & back of the PCB?

Sorry, I currently don't have a conventional digicam, at least not one that would be able to provide high enough resolution views.

Thanks, Jon.
